Stoll et al. [142] have described a rapid continuous-flow determination of total inorganic carbon in seawater samples. The method runs on an autoanalyser Traacs 800 spectrophotometric system and is calibrated versus certified reference materials readily available. A typical analysis speed of 45 samples per hour can be reached with an accuracy of 2-3 xM and a precision of 2.5 xM. 

Inorganic mass spectrometry requires the development of suitable reference materials, such as matrix matched standard reference materials for trace, surface (including depth profiling and microlocal) analysis and/or the creation of matrix independent calibration procedures. The development of species specific standards will be intensified for speciation studies in the future.

From practical considerations, for the area of inorganic analysis, there are two methods, the results of which are not dependent on a known amount of substance in some form of reference material (RM) (sometimes called absolute methods) ... 

These comments indicate the difficulty of the task of organic trace analysis. It is also necessary to mention that confirmation of the quality of the determination is more difficult than for trace inorganic analysis (where certified reference materials can be used), because of the greater variety of analytes and their chemical instability.

Any CRM for chemical composition is suitable for the purpose of trace analysis if it is certified for trace constituents and minimum sample mass, which guarantees that the homogeneity of the material is appropriate for the analytical method used in a laboratory.
