Reduce Your Stress

Not too many years ago, Western doctors dismissed the idea that mental health and physical health are inextricably linked. They were particularly condescending toward women, who learned to keep their feelings to themselves. The word hysteria comes from the Greek word for woman, and has the connotation of acting emotionally, irrationally, like a woman. But the reality is that both men and women are indeed affected by their emotions, both positively and negatively. [Pg.90]

British researchers have reported in the August 2006 issue of Heart that both physical exertion and anger may trigger the onset of chest pain and other cardiac symptoms in patients with heart disease. In fact, emotional states can even precipitate a heart attack. [Pg.90]

Many times, I ve seen how stress can have a horrible impact on cardiovascular health, and I m sure you have as well. Have you ever said, This job is killing me, That wife/husband of mine is going to give me a heart attack, or Rush hour traffic makes my blood pressure skyrocket Of course, you have. We all have, so you have lots of company. [Pg.90]

In the coming pages, I d like to share some very personal observations, some solid scientific proof of the link connecting emotional states, blood pressure, and heart attacks and strokes, and some suggestions that, yes, you can play a part in controlling some of the stress in your life. [Pg.90]

In your effort to create some sort of structure to reduce the stress of being asked so many questions by so many people at such a fast rate, the tendency is to focus on answering the questions of one person on the panel. This is a mistake. Instead, you should try to include all members of the panel in the discussion. Make eye contact with the person who has asked the question, but make sure you include others by making eye contact with them as well. Keeping your welder s cool can help reduce heat stress symptoms. An innovative first. Miller s exclusive CoolBand and CoolBelt reduce the temperature under the welding hood. [Pg.49]

However, the price of all these benefits has been high. The rapid growth of industry and agriculture, for instance, has stressed the Earth and damaged our inheritance. There is now widespread concern about the preservation of our extraordinary planet. It will be up to you and your contemporaries to draw on chemistry—in whatever career you choose—to build on what has already been achieved. Perhaps you will help to start a new phase of civilization based on new materials, just as semiconductors transformed society in the twentieth century. Perhaps you will help to reduce the harshness of the impact of progress on our environment. To do that, you will need chemistry. [Pg.26]

Improving your management of time could well help to reduce significantly any stress you may be experiencing. But whether you ended up with a spare block of time that you could use for new purposes is uncertain. [Pg.174]

Take charge of your career, it reduces stress even if you do not make it to the top. [Pg.63]

Use Design of Experiments (DOE) (Technique 50) to test how varying control factors affect your design. You should also test control factors against noise variables to stress the design and ultimately reduce sensitivity to customer use and abuse, as well as deterioration. [Pg.226]

In the above, X is the chain stretch, which is greater than unity when the flow is fast enough (i.e., y T, > 1) that the retraction process is not complete, and the chain s primitive path therefore becomes stretched. This magnifies the stress, as shown by the multiplier X in the equation for the stress tensor a, Eq. (3-78d). The tensor Q is defined as Q/5, where Q is defined by Eq. (3-70). Convective constraint release is responsible for the last terms in Eqns. (A3-29a) and (A3-29c) these cause the orientation relaxation time r to be shorter than the reptation time Zti and reduce the chain stretch X. Derive the predicted dependence of the dimensionless shear stress On/G and the first normal stress difference M/G on the dimensionless shear rate y for rd/r, = 50 and compare your results with those plotted in Fig. 3-35. [Pg.185]

To keep your bones healthy, you need to help your body maintain proper pH balance. Switching to a more alkaline-forming diet and confronting stress can go a long way toward preventing osteoporosis. You will learn more about stress-reducing lifestyle choices in chapter 7. [Pg.68]

While an alkaline diet is one of the best ways to kick acid in your body, it is also important to reduce stress—or at least improve your ability to relax during stressful times. Meditation and breathing exercises are great ways to reduce acid-forming stress hormones and increase oxygen, which helps alkalize your blood. In the next chapter, you ll learn about important lifestyle changes or additions that will help you kick acid for life. [Pg.114]

While I have seen the benefits of acupuncture in many patients with many different health concerns, very little research has been conducted on its effectiveness at reducing acidity in the body. However, acupuncture s immune-boosting properties would certainly play a role in helping your body deal with the impact of a pH imbalance. Acupuncture also helps the body get rid of toxic buildup in the joints, organs, and tissues that may be disrupting the proper flow of energy. Equally important, acupuncture is an excellent stress-reduction tool. I anticipate that, over time, research will validate acupuncture s ability to help restore acid—alkaline balance. [Pg.126]

Always leave plenty of air space at the back of the panels so that air can circulate and cool them. They get very hot in use, and heat reduces their efficiency and can stress the materials, especially your soldered connections, so do whatever you can to keep the panels as cool as possible. [Pg.70]

Identify and address stress Removing or reducing excessive stimulation is the first line of defense for vata imbalances, but only rarely is such stimulation at the root of the initial problem. Vata-based anxiety and depression is almost always based in some type of stress, and once you know what the stressor is, you re well on your way to addressing the disorder. [Pg.136]

Being physically active is invaluable not only to your body in many general ways, but also specifically to your brain chemistry. Physical exercise reduces stress and stimulates your neuroendocrine system in a healthy way (see Chapter i6). So ... [Pg.215]

By carefully monitoring your workers during the upcoming hot months and keeping their core temperatures down, you can maintain the productivity levels achieved during the cooler months, while reducing errors and sick days. When you help your workers avoid heat stress, you not only improve their quality of life, you may also discover a reduction in employee turnover — and the additional costs associated with that. [Pg.68]

Before that important meeting with your boss or customers, or a similarly stressful situation, allow yourself a few minutes in private, if possible. Take a few deep breaths coupled with moderate exercise. Endorphins, sometimes called feel good hormones are naturally released chemicals from your body due to exercise. These are known to relieve pain, reduce stress and, overall, to produce a feeling of wellbeing. [Pg.334]

Shift Work. This DVD helps your shift workers improve both performance and safety by showing them how to successfully cope with the two biggest challenges of working nonstandard hours fatigue and stress.
