Laboratory tests indicated that gamma radiation treatment and cross-linking using triaHylcyanurate or acetylene produced a flexible recycled plastic from mixtures of polyethylene, polypropylene, general-purpose polystyrene, and high impact grade PS (62). 

These lower prices make it more difficult for recycled plastics to compete with virgin resins in the absence of legislation mandating plastics recycling.

Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), which offers excellent properties at potentially lower cost, is finding wider use as a raw material component and meeting increasing demands for environmentally compatible resins (see POLYESTERS,THERMOPLASTIC Recycling, PLASTICS). 

Transesterification has a number of important commercial uses. Methyl esters of fatty acids are produced from fats and oils. Transesterification is also the basis of recycling technology to break up poly(ethylene terephthalate) [25038-59-9] to monomer for reuse (29) (see Recycling, plastics). Because vinyl alcohol does not exist, poly(vinyl alcohol) [9002-89-5] is produced commercially by base-cataly2ed alcoholysis of poly(vinyl acetate) [9003-20-7] (see Vinyl polymers). An industrial example of acidolysis is the reaction of poly(vinyl acetate) with butyric acid to form poly(vinyl butyrate) [24991-31-9].

This is an injection moulding method which permits material costs to be reduced in large mouldings. In most mouldings it is the outer surface of an article which is important in terms of performance in service. If an article has to be thick in order that it will have adequate flexural stiffness then the material within the core of the article is wasted because its only function is to keep the outer surfaces apart. The philosophy of sandwich moulding is that two different materials (or two forms of the same material) should be used for the core and skin. That is, an expensive high performance material is used for the skin and a low-cost commodity or recycled plastic is used for the core. The way that this can be achieved is illustrated in Fig. 4.44. 

This subject effects designers since many products have the requirement by regulations or otherwise to use recycled plastics. Different methods are used to recycle materials to provide plastics with a continuing life. Method used is influenced by factors such as costs, quantity involved, weight involved, size and shape, complexity of mixed types of plastics, extended of contamination such as metallic particles, continued availability of material, etc. (Recognize that they can also be used as energy sources through incineration that can be combined with production of electricity and/or hot water for example).
