Recreation products

Many plastic products seen in everyday life are not required to undergo sophisticated design analysis because they are not required to withstand high static and dynamic loads (Chapter 2). Examples include containers, cups, toys (Fig. 10-1), boxes, housings for computers, radios, televisions and the like, electric iron (Fig. 10-2), recreational products (Figs. 10-3 and 10-4) and nonstructural... 

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent federal regulatory agency created by Congress in 1972. The agency s mission is to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products. The CPSC has jurisdiction over 15 000 types of products used in and around the home, in schools, and in recreation. Products under the jurisdiction of CPSC include clothing, children s articles, household appliances, home furnishings, cleaners, and consumer fireworks. CPSC is directed by three Commissioners, each of whom is appointed by the President of the United States, with one of the Commissioners nominated by the President to the position of Chairman.

The most insidious fetal neurotoxin known to us is available as a recreational product in every supermarket in cans and bottles large and small. It is ethyl alcohol (ethanol). In the brain, it acts as a depressant, reducing the activity of nerve cells by acting on neuron membranes to prevent nerve impulses. When it appears to stimulate adult behavior, it s the result of depression of inhibitory neural circuits. 

The applications for aU grades of polystyrene include packaging, housewares, toys and recreational products, electronics, appliances, furniture, and building and construction insulation (Table 15.4).

When propylene is polymerized into polypropylene, it can be used for rope and other recreational products. 

As the value of fiber-reinforced polymers became apparent and accepted in electrical applications, recreation products, and corrosive environments, these synthetic materials began to penetrate virtually every other market worldwide, from automotive and marine to primary structural elements of aircraft and bridges. Such widespread growth in product applications mandated corresponding growth in materials technology, design approaches, and fabrication processes.

Other applications include industrial, consumer and recreation products. 

In terms of end user markets, the automotive sector is the major user of PBT accounting for 41.0% of total world consumption, followed by electrical and electronics with 32.3%, consumer/recreation products 14.3% and industrial products 7.8%. Other markets account for the remaining 4.6% of demand. Consumer and recreation products have increased their share of total demand in the last two years because these markets have been more resilient in the face of the global economic downturn.

One of my favorite examples of the using resources in the supply chain came early in my career when I was working for Kransco Manufacturing. Kransco made number of recreational products, mostly in the swimming and surfing area. One of their most well-known products was a line of body boards, sold under the brand name Morey Boogie.
