Not only can molecular design improve the miscibility with other oils, it can also confer ILs with special functions, such as antioxidation and the ability to adapt to a broader temperature range. We synthesized three imidazolium-based ILs containing sterically hindered phenol groups with antioxidant functions and evaluated the tribological behaviors of these ILs as additives for PEG appfication in steeFsteel contacts on an Optimol SRV-IV oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester, as well as on MRS-IJ four-ball testers [100]. The rotary bomb oxidation test (RBOT) test, thermal analysis, and Cu strip test results revealed that synthesized ILs possessed excellent antioxidation capability. [Pg.227]

Reciprocating wear tests have shown that conversion coatings and oxidized surfaces provided some improvement in wear characteristics, but when conversion coated samples were also oxidized, a marked improvement was noted. The conversion coating increases the oxidation rate of titanivim at about 425 °C (800 °F) and may increase oxidation rates at temperatures up to 595 °C (1100 °F). A pin on flat apparatus (Fig. 2) was used to measure wear rate under concentrated contact and reciprocating motion. The square plate is made of alumina, zirconia or alumina/zirconia nanocomposite ceramics. The pin of medical grade alumina had an end face with 10 mm spherical radius. The lower plate oscillates while the vertical load is applied to the pin by dead weights. Friction force is measured with strain gauges attached to the double leaf springs. To investigate the anti-wear properties of the ring zone samples, the contact performance of the cold start samples is being evaluated using High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) techniques. The very small samples required for each test are ideal for the small sample volumes available.
