Recency

The most important reason for this more flexible rule is found in Section 5 No work shall have a prize awarded to it unless it has been proved by the test of experience or by the examination of experts to possess the preeminant excellence that is manifestly signified by the terms of the will. The effect of the recency rule in the period 1901-1915 was examined by Crawford who concluded that it was applied with flexibility, dependent on what kind of situations were examined, and that works carried out within the past two decades were considered for prizes. 

Thus, the candidacies of Gomberg and Schlenk were ruled out in 1924 by their recency statute, presumably after some discussion in the committee, as can be deduced from the unusually long statement in the Academy report. In that year, no Nobel prize was awarded because of the lack of suitable candidates (the nominees of 1924 are listed in Table 5), somewhat surprisingly, in view of the fact that the prize winners of the three coming years were nominated in 1924. The prize of 1924 was reserved for the next year and, in the end, forever. So, there is a question which is bound to be difficult to answer Was the committee really so deeply concerned about the recency statute, or did it simply not want to award the discovery of free radicals Gomberg was to be nominated in 1927, 1928, 1929 (with Schlenk), 1938 and 1940 but the committee, now with largely different members, always dealt with these nominations by reference to the Academy report of 1924 and Widman s special reports of 1921 and 1918. 

Epidemiological studies of the relation between oral contraceptive use and pelvic endometriosis have variously shown an increased risk, a reduced risk, and no effect (268). For example, an Italian study showed an increased risk among ever users of oral contraceptives, but this increase occurred only among former users, not current users (269). Furthermore, the authors noted that a similar pattern had been shown in several large cohort studies (OFPA, RCGP, and Walnut Creek). There was no association in the Italian study with recency, latency, or... 

It is strange that so little structural work has been carried out on a substance having such great industrial potential as has carboxymethyl-cellulose. The mitigating factor seems to be the recency of its industrial development, especially in the United States.

It is no secret that taking a biopsychosocial perspective of the causes of the substance-use disorders leads us to a new level of complexity. But drugs and human behavior is a complex subject that requires complex analysis for its understanding. As a consequence of the recency of the development of cluster chemistry, most research in this field has been directed toward preparation of clusters and subsequent determination of their structure by X-ray studies.
