Reactor Westinghouse

Another reactor that was approved for development was a land-based prototype submarine propulsion reactor. Westinghouse Electric Corp. designed this pressurized water reactor, using data collected by Argonne. Built at NRTS, the reactor used enriched uranium, the metal fuel in the form of plates. A similar reactor was installed in the submarine l autilus.

When the Du Pont contract ended in 1989, Westinghouse took over. Plans for upgrading the existing reactors and constmcting a new production reactor have been abandoned. 

One was a water-moderated and water-cooled pressurized reactor the other was a Hquid-metal-cooled iatermediate neutron energy reactor. A land-based prototype submafine power plant called Mark I was built and tested at the National Reactor Testing Station. Argonne National Laboratory provided scientific data and Bettis Laboratory of Westinghouse Electric Corp. suppHed engineering expertise.

Although the Westinghouse s PWR Shippingport reactor was the first LW R to generate electricity in the U.S., GE s BWR Dresden 1 reactor followed within a year. Operating power reactors range from 600 to 1,200 MWe (million watts of electric power). Since the thermodynamic efficiency is -33%, the thermal heat production is 1,800 to 3,600 MWt. In December 2006, Westinghouse, a major maker of nuclear power plants (and owned by Toshiba in Japan), announced a multi-billion dollar deal to sell four new nuclear plants to China. The deal, worth about 5 billion, includes work to be performed by U.S. engineering giant Shaw Group, Inc. AREVA Group also has a deal with China for two reactors and approximately 20 years worth of atomic fuel. Thanks to the nuclear efforts in China and other countries in the Far East, more than 20,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity have come online globally since 2000.
