Westinghouse-type reactor

The Westinghouse-type PWR (Figs. 19.2 and 19.12) reactor is presently the dominating nuclear power reactor in the world. 

Although the Westinghouse s PWR Shippingport reactor was the first LW R to generate electricity in the U.S., GE s BWR Dresden 1 reactor followed within a year. Operating power reactors range from 600 to 1,200 MWe (million watts of electric power). Since the thermodynamic efficiency is -33%, the thermal heat production is 1,800 to 3,600 MWt. Both types of reactor operate at about the same temperature (-bOOT),... 

A broad spectrum of approaches and results for various types of reactors operated in the European region (WWER, RBMK, CANDU, Westinghouse PWR, BWR) were covered in the presentations. 

A system of the CRS type was adopted for a German-designed PWR and, ten years later, by Westinghouse for its advanced passive safety reactor AP 600. 

A series of critical experiments has been conducted at the Westinghouse Reactor Evaluation Center with plutonium-bearing fuel moderated by light water. The Zir-caloy-clad fuel consisted of 2 wt% PUO2-UO lent for the purpose of these experiments by BNWL. The uranium Isotopic ratio corresponded to the natural proportion two types of fuel were used which differed in plutonium isotopic ratios and which can be characterized by their Pu content 8 and 24%. 

Integral type pressurized water reactors targeted for near term deployment SMART (the Republic of Korea), IRIS (the International Consortium, led by Westinghouse, USA), CAREM (Argentina), and SCOR (AREVA-CEA, France) ... 

Decommissioning in Sweden will involve twelve nuclear power plants located at four different sites (fig. 1). Nine are of the boiling light water reactor type designed and delivered by the ABB-Atom company and three are of pressuriz light water reactor type delivered by Westinghouse (Table I). 

Accordingly, Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin No. 83-04" was issued on March 11, 1983, to all pressurized water nuclear power reactor facilities holding an operating license except those with Westinghouse DB type breakers for action and to other nuclear power reactor facilities for information. The Bulletin described the San Onofre events and mentioned that similar events involving the General Electric AK-2 type breakers had previously occurred at Arkansas Unit 1, Crystal River Unit 3, Oconee Units 1 and 3, Three Mile Island Unit 1, St. Lucie Unit 1, and Rancho Seco Unit 1. Licensees were to (a) take actions similar to those required by Bulletin No. 83-01, (b)... 

The manufacturer s allowable displacement limits for expansion joints for the existing expansion joints (see Hartman, et al. Evaluation of Expansion Joints in the Reactor Process Water Piping, DuPont, July 1988) and the new Model X expansion joints (see Specification for Procurement of Metallic Bellows-Type Expansion Joints in the Reactor Process Water, Westinghouse, July 1989) shall be used. Use NC-3649 as the acceptance criteria for stress computation if the manufacturer s allowable displacement limits cannot be met and code stress computation is used to show acceptability.
