A micelle-bound substrate will experience a reaction environment different from bulk water, leading to a kinetic medium effect. Hence, micelles are able to catalyse or inhibit organic reactions. Research on micellar catalysis has focused on the kinetics of the organic reactions involved. An overview of the multitude of transformations that have been studied in micellar media is beyond the scope of this chapter. Instead, the reader is referred to an extensive set of review articles and monographs" ... [Pg.129]

As the amines become more weakly basic, the normal method of diazotization becomes progressively more difficult. The equilibrium between amine and ammonium salt increasingly favors the former which, usually because of its poor solubility in water, is prevented from taking part in the reaction. Research into the mechanism of diazotization has demonstrated that the important step is the addition of the nitrosating agent to the base of the amine. Thus, the acidity for each diazotization should be so chosen that the equilibrium concentration of base corresponds to that of its saturated solution. This rule leads to the use of higer concentrations of aqueous mineral acid for weakly basic amines. [Pg.21]

Using Pd-mediated cross-coupling reactions, such as Suzuki, Heck, and Sonoga-shira- Hagihara reaction, researchers efficiently constructed a library of 151 coumarin derivatives from eight 3-bromocoumarins cross-coupled with ten aryl/heteroaryl boronic acids, ten alkenes, and ten alkynes (Fig. 4). [Pg.154]

The primary type of epoxide reaction remains the nucleophilic ring-opening reaction. Research on the development of novel catalysts or catalytic systems for epoxide opening continues to be a highly active area of study. [Pg.74]

Rapid advances are taking place in the application of DFT to describe complex chemical reactions. Researchers in different fields working in the domain of quantum chemistry tend to have different perspectives and to use different computational approaches. DFT owes its popularity to recent developments in predictive powers for physical and chemical properties and its ability to accurately treat large systems. Both theoretical content and computational methodology are developing at a pace, which offers scientists working in diverse fields of quantum chemistry, cluster science, and solid state physics. [Pg.503]

The most direct approach to the four-membered S-ring is cycloaddition of sulfenes to alkenes. The sulfenes are generated in situ by base-induced de-hydrohalogenation of sulfonyl chlorides. Because of their special susceptibility to cycloaddition reactions, research into the chemistry of sulfenes is expanding. [Pg.212]

FuUerenes are generally stable molecitles, but they do enter into chemical reactions. Researchers have managed to replace some of the carbon atoms in buckminsterfullerene with other atoms such as nitrogen, making molecules such as molecule has a soccer ball shape but... [Pg.14]

Oxidative chain reactions of organic compounds are current targets of theoretical and experimental study. The kinetic theory of collisions has influenced research on liquid-phase oxidation. This has led to determining rate constants for chain initiation, branching, extension, and rupture and to establishing the influence of solvent, vessel wall, and other factors in the mechanism of individual reactions. Research on liquid-phase oxidation has led to studies on free radical mechanisms and the role of peroxides in their formation. [Pg.13]

The reaction research is based on the perception of the features in the ANALYSIS module, and a strategy is developed which includes the construction of possible intermediates or products. A reaction is described in three steps, each one corresponding to one module (1) SEARCH for substructures within the molecules or complexes which signal the possibil-... [Pg.172]

Neuroleptics increase the toxicity of the sunlight to human skin, causing discolorations and other adverse dermal reactions. Researchers noted this phenomenon, called phototoxicity, and set out to study its effects on cells loaded with the neuroleptics fluphenazine, perphenazine, or thioridazine (Bastianon et al., 2005). They found that exposure of these cells to light caused abnormalities in both the plasma membrane and mitochondria. [Pg.89]

Kinetic data involving reactions of gas phase ions are scattered through the literature. For the only recent comprehensive compilation of bimolecular rate constants for both anions and cations see Y Ikezoe, S Matsuoka, M Takebe, A Viggiano. Gas Phase Ion—Molecule Reaction Rate Constants Through 1986. Ion Reaction Research Group, Tokyo, 1987. [Pg.119]
