NUTRITIONAL DEMANDS OF STRESS. Nutrient requirements of the stressed individual are affected by the previous nutritional status, and the type and duration of the stress. The 1989 edition of Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), compiled by the Committee on Dietary Allowances and the Food and Nutrition Board, provides for the nutrient needs of healthy people living under usual environmental stresses. (See Table N-3.) The RDAs do not allow for the special needs of infections and chronic diseases—both forms of stress. Due to the individuality of the response to stress, persons under severe stress must be individually identified. Stress severe enough to increase the body s needs for essential nutrients may come from physical factors, or from psychological or emotional factors. [Pg.994]

Als) rather than as recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) because insufficient data have been accumulated to determine estimated average requirements (EARs) across the life cycle. The Als listed in Table 1 are totally independent of skin production of vitamin D. Because of the uncertainty of knowing the amount of endogenous vitamin D, it is very difficult to determine, with accuracy, the amounts needed from the diet (see below). [Pg.467]

In addition to RDIs and RDAs, there is a set of values termed the dietary reference intakes (DRIs). These are the most recent set of dietary recommendations established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, 1997-2001. DRIs vary significantly from the current RDIs and may provide the basis for updating the RDIs in the future (see www.nal.usda.gOv/fnic/etext/000105.html). [Pg.380]

Due to a lack of sufficient data, a provisional daily dietary manganese intake (instead of an RDA) for adults of 2 - 5 mg as a nutritional standard has been recommended by the Food and Nutrition Board of the NRC (1989) in the USA and by the DGE (2000) in Germany (see Section 16.5). Likewise, the WHO (1996) does not propose a safe range of mean population intakes for manganese. [Pg.925]
