NUTRITIONAL DEMANDS OF STRESS. Nutrient requirements of the stressed individual are affected by the previous nutritional status, and the type and duration of the stress. The 1989 edition of Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), compiled by the Committee on Dietary Allowances and the Food and Nutrition Board, provides for the nutrient needs of healthy people living under usual environmental stresses. (See Table N-3.) The RDAs do not allow for the special needs of infections and chronic diseases—both forms of stress. Due to the individuality of the response to stress, persons under severe stress must be individually identified. Stress severe enough to increase the body s needs for essential nutrients may come from physical factors, or from psychological or emotional factors.

The Als listed in Table 1 are totally independent of skin production of vitamin D. Because of the uncertainty of knowing the amount of endogenous vitamin D, it is very difficult to determine, with accuracy, the amounts needed from the diet (see below).
