Randomization list

Another approach used to automate the randomization process is by embedding pregenerated randomization lists in the data collection and management system. The main disadvantage of this approach is the security of the randomization lists. This can be remedied by having the system dynamically generate randomization numbers. [Pg.625]

Unrestricted (or simple) randomisation is simply a random list of, for example, As and Bs. In a moderately large trial, with say n = 200 subjects, such a process will likely produce approximately equal group sizes. There is no guarantee however that this will automatically happen and in small trials, in particular, this can cause problems. [Pg.5]

In reyiews of manuscripts, generally I like to sec about one sentence that summarizes the reyiewer s assessment of the importance of the work and one sentence that tells me the reyiewer s recommendation. If the reviewer has suggestions for revision, these should be numbered, and their relative importance should be indicated. In fact, ideally the important recommendations should be separated from the trivial ones. I spend a lot of time reading reviews, and I get really upset when I am presented with a random list of comments, some with lots of substance and others verv trivial. Reviews that go on for more than one page are fine, but they need to be broken up with subheadings so that the editors can decide what to spend time studying. One should never send a review that recommends rejection without some specific details. I realize that this is a lot of work, but in the absence of this the author will simply request additional review. [Pg.171]

A coding system should be introduced to permit the proper identification of blinded products. The code, together with the randomization list, must permit proper identification of the product, including any necessary traceability to the codes and batch number of the product before the blinding operation. The coding system must permit determination without delay in an emergency situation of the identity of the actual treatment product received by individual subjects. [Pg.111]

Stratification. (1) In the context of the design of clinical trials, a means of carrying out the randomization within demographic strata of the trial population. For example, a separate randomization list may be maintained for male and female patients in order to ensure that there is a balance of sexes within the treatment groups. (2) In the context of the analysis of clinical trials, a means of analysis which first compares the effects of treatment within demographic strata before combining these results into an overall summary. It is usually considered necessary to stratify at analysis if one has stratified at randomization. However, it is generally accepted that one may (and under certain circumstances should) stratify at analysis even if one has not been able to do so at randomization. [Pg.478]

Merging two sorted lists requires only one traversal of each list—the key idea in merg sort. To sort a list by merging, one begins with many short sorted lists. Often those runs of elements in a random list that are already in order form one of them. The process merges them two at a... [Pg.103]

On many projects, incinerator contractor evaluation and selection under step 3 involve no more than a solicitation of prices from a random listing of vendors with the award of a contract to that firm proposing a system for the least cost. There are two basic problems with this approach. First, the selected incinerator contractors are assumed to have equivalent capabilities and qualifications. Second, least cosf acceptance assumes that the equipment offered by each of the contractors is equivalent or identical. A comparative value assessment of proposals usually results in the procurement of a superior quality system for a negligible price difference. It is not uncommon to see cost proposals low by no more than 10%, but the equipment offered of only half the quality of the competition. [Pg.494]

These criteria were applied to the birth records data and randomized lists of names were created. Standard personalized letters were sent to the parents after checking with the Electoral Register whether they were still resident. All letters were carefully checked for readability prior to being sent out. Initial letters were followed up by personal calls to explain the project and to recmit subjects. At least one call-back was made if the family was not at home. [Pg.202]
