In routine analysis, often a one-dimensional so-called end-point titration can be automatically carried out up to a pre-set pH or potential value and with a previously chosen overall titration velocity in order to avoid overshoot, the inflection point should be sufficiently sharp and the titrant delivery must automatically diminish on the approach to that point in order to maintain equilibrium, and stop in time at the pre-set value. For instance, the Metrohm 526 end-point titrator changes both the dosing pulse length and its velocity by means of a pulse regulator in accordance with the course of the titration curve in fact, the instrument follows the titration two-dimensionally, but finally reports only a one-dimensional result. The Radiometer ETS 822 end-point titration system offers similar possibilities. However, automated titrations mostly represent examples of a two-dimensional so-called eqilibrium titration, where the titration velocity is inversely proportional to the steepness of the potentiometric titration curve hence the first derivative of the curve can usually also be recorded as a more accurate means of determining the inflection... [Pg.339]

Profiling radiometers measure and display the peak power and total density ion of a UV curing system and also profile the temperature and irradiance as a function of time. The information is transferred into a computer. They are capable of comparing characteristics of multiple lamps, comparing UV systems over time, or comparing different systems to each other. They track and store archival data. An example of profiling radiometers is in Figure 9.6. [Pg.223]

Radiometers for three-dimensional cure are used for simultaneous multipoint measurements, for setup and process verification of the lamp system. They can be used with UV lamps mounted on a fixed bank or a robotic arm. The collected exposure data (irradiance and total UV energy) are displayed on a computer for each sensor position. A photoinduced discharge apparatus includes a corona charging unit, an exposure system, and a noncontacting voltmeter. A grid is usually positioned between the corona wires and the sample to control the corona current. The apparatus is normally provided with a beam splitter and radiometer. The surface potentials are determined by a capacitively coupled probe and FET amplifier. The time derivative of the voltage can be obtained electronically or by numerical differentiation on a computer. When a time resolution greater than 10 ms is adequate, commercial voltmeters, for example, Monroe Electronics Isoprobe or Trek Electrostatic voltmeters, can be used. Hansen, Lamm, and Ruzicka described the Selectrode (trademark of Radiometer A/S), which involves a specially treated graphite electrode in direct contact with an electroactive surface. Typical is the halide electrode, involving a layer of silver halide and sulfide in direct contact with a graphite electrode that has been rendered hydrophobic by treatment with Teflon. Another example is the Cu(II) electrode, based on a similar preparation using CuS or CuSe. The Selectrodes couple an electronic conductor directly to the solid-state detector, which is an ionic conductor. Althou the mechanism of coupling is not clear. Buck suggested that an interfacial potential can be communicated through solid-state equilibria to the electronic conductor without the intervention of a redox process. [Pg.247]

Not all trends are linear. The nature of the trend is determined by the data itself. Nonlinear trends can be important and frequently are more difficult to remove from the data. For example, second- and fifth-order polynomials were used previously (5i) to remove nonlinear trends in radiomet-rically sensed sea surface temperature data. Nonlinear trend removal, however, was not used in this study because the linear trend analysis proved adequate. A method suitable for the removal of nonlinear trends from underway data can be found in Reference 47. [Pg.426]

Single-use devices for blood gas and other critical care measurements are also available through optical sensors or optodes (see Chapters 4 and 27). The Osmetech OPTI Critical Care Analyzer (Figure 12-8) and the Radiometer NPT 7 are examples of this type of technology.
