Scientific research has led to significant success in the practical applications of organic ion radicals. Such applications should widen in the future. It is very important to concentrate effort on the elaboration of preparative methods of ion radical organic chemistry, including stereospecific methods. The correct choice of new developmental procedures opens up a wealth of new directions. It is hoped that interest in this area will continue to ensure the flow of new ideas and reactions, particularly in the area of organic synthesis in liquid phase and without light irradiation. 

I have worked in the field of organic ion radicals and their applications for several decades and have become more and more fascinated by the beauty of this area and the diversity it presents. Understanding the role of ion radicals is as difficult as it is interesting. I hope that this attempt to graft this branch to the organic chemistry tree will be useful both for further advancing basic research and for facilitating new practical applications. 

A comprehensive review of A-centered radical reactions appeared in 1973 [1], and the aminium radical chemistry has also been thoroughly reviewed in 1980 [2]. Other reviews, some dealing with specific sub-areas, have been published throughout the last thirty years [3-13]. It is the aim of this report to survey the more important developments in the area of synthetic applications and to summarize how a practicing organic chemist can expand the classical repertoire of synthetic methods by using A-centered radical reactions. No attempt has been made to present an exhaustive review of the literature, but, rather, a few specific examples without excessive details are discussed to demonstrate the key features.
