Organic chemistry, applications

Synthetic organic chemistry applications employing alkane C-H functionalizations are now well established. For example, alkanes can be oxidized to alkyl halides and alcohols by the Shilov system employing electrophilic platinum salts. Much of the Pt(ll)/Pt(rv) alkane activation chemistry discussed earlier has been based on Shilov chemistry. The mechanism has been investigated and is thought to involve the formation of a platinum(ll) alkyl complex, possibly via a (T-complex. The Pt(ll) complex is oxidized to Pt(iv) by electron transfer, and nucleophilic attack on the Pt(iv) intermediate yields the alkyl chloride or alcohol as well as regenerates the Pt(n) catalyst. This process is catalytic in Pt(ll), although a stoichiometric Pt(rv) oxidant is often required (Scheme 6).27,27l 2711... [Pg.107]

The useful and selective reactivity of arylboronic acids makes them favorite building blocks for many modern organic chemistry applications. Arylboronic acids also serve as highly useful arylpalladium precursors in palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidative Heck reactions. Andappan et al. developed a microwave-accelerated protocol for oxidative Heck couplings using cop-per(II) acetate as the palladium reoxidant [52]. The method proved to be... [Pg.112]

Rinse the piece of glassware thoroughly with water and then wash with soap and water. For most common organic chemistry applications, any stains that survive this treatment are not likely to cause difficulty in subsequent laboratory procedures. [Pg.600]

That interactions between molecules in the biological world are highly enantioselective is not surprising, but just how these interactions are accomplished at the molecular level with such precision and efficiency is a great puzzle that is an active area of scientific research. Scientists in the field of bioorganic chemistry seek to better understand and harness the incredible power of biological molecules, especially enzymes, for use in organic chemistry applications. [Pg.175]
