Many municipal water sources are chlorinated and contain sufficiently high levels of chlorine so as to be toxic to aquatic life. Chlorine can be removed by passing the water through activated charcoal filters or through the use of sodium thiosulfate metered into the incoming water. Municipal water is usually not used in aquaculture operations that utilize large quantities of water, either continuously or periodically, because of the initial high cost of the water and the cost of pretreatment to remove chlorine. [Pg.19]

Tracer Type. A discrete quantity of a foreign substance is injected momentarily into the flow stream and the time interval for this substance to reach a detection point, or pass between detection points, is measured. From this time, the average velocity can be computed. Among the tracers that have historically been used are salt, anhydrous ammonia, nitrous oxide, dyes, and radioactive isotopes. Viscosity is equal to the slope of the flow curve, Tf = dr/dj. The quantity r/y is the viscosity Tj for a Newtonian Hquid and the apparent viscosity Tj for a non-Newtonian Hquid. The kinematic viscosity is the viscosity coefficient divided by the density, ly = tj/p. The fluidity is the reciprocal of the viscosity, (j) = 1/rj. The common units for viscosity, dyne seconds per square centimeter ((dyn-s)/cm ) or grams per centimeter second ((g/(cm-s)), called poise, which is usually expressed as centipoise (cP), have been replaced by the SI units of pascal seconds, ie, Pa-s and mPa-s, where 1 mPa-s = 1 cP. In the same manner the shear stress units of dynes per square centimeter, dyn/cmhave been replaced by Pascals, where 10 dyn/cm = 1 Pa, and newtons per square meter, where 1 N/m = 1 Pa. Shear rate is AH/AX, or length /time/length, so that values are given as per second (s ) in both systems. The SI units for kinematic viscosity are square centimeters per second, cm /s, ie, Stokes (St), and square millimeters per second, mm /s, ie, centistokes (cSt). Techniques for handling sodium in commercial-scale appHcations have improved (5,23,98,101,102). Contamination by sodium oxide is kept at a minimum by completely welded constmction and inert gas-pressured transfers. Residual oxide is removed by cold traps or micrometallic filters. Special mechanical pumps or leak-free electromagnetic pumps and meters work well with clean Hquid sodium. Corrosion of stainless or carbon steel equipment is minimi2ed by keeping the oxide content low. The 8-h TWA PEL and ceiling TLV for sodium or sodium oxide or hydroxide smoke exposure is 2 mg/m. There is no defined AID for pure sodium, as even the smallest quantity ingested could potentially cause fatal injury. [Pg.168]

Conventional nitrocellulose lacquer finishing leads to the emission of large quantities of solvents into the atmosphere. An ingeneous approach to reducing VOC emissions is the use of supercritical carbon dioxide as a component of the solvent mixture (172). The critical temperature and pressure of CO2 are 31.3°C and 7.4 MPa (72.9 atm), respectively. Below that temperature and above that pressure, CO2 is a supercritical fluid. It has been found that under these conditions, the solvency properties of CO2 ate similar to aromatic hydrocarbons (see Supercritical fluids). The coating is shipped in a concentrated form, then metered with supercritical CO2 into a proportioning airless spray gun system in such a ratio as to reduce the viscosity to the level needed for proper atomization. VOC emission reductions of 50% or more are projected. [Pg.357]
