Certain compounds of this type are potent carcinogens. One of the most dangerous is benzo[a]pyrene, which has been detected in cigarette smoke. It is believed to be a cause of lung cancer, to which smokers are susceptible. [Pg.590]

The investigation by Becker et al. (1977 b) also included work on the effect of pyrene added as electron donor. Pyrene has an absorption maximum at 335 nm (e = 55000 M-1cm-1, in petroleum). Much more hydro-de-diazoniation takes place in the presence of pyrene with irradiation at 365 nm, and even more on irradiation with light of wavelength <313 nm. Photoexcited pyrene has a half-life of 300 ns and is able to transfer an electron to the diazonium ion. This electron transfer is diffusion-controlled (k= (2-3) X 1010 m 1s 1, Becker et al., 1977a). The radical pairs formed (ArN2 S +) can be detected by 13C- and 15N-CIDNP experiments (Becker et al., 1983, and papers cited there). [Pg.280]

Each plant tissue tends to have an obviously distinctive profile of flavonoids. The flavonoid content can reach about 0.5% in pollen, 10% in propolis, and about 6 mg/kg in honey. Havonoid aglycones appear to be present only in propolis and honey, while pollen contains flavanols in herosidic forms. The flavonoids in honey and propolis have been identified as flavanones and flavanones/flavanols (Campos et ah, 1990). The antimi-crobially active flavanone pinocembrine was foimd to be a major flavonoid in honey (Bogdanov, 1989). Amiot et ah (1989) studied two blossom and two honeydew Swiss honey samples and foimd that pinocembrine was the main flavonoid. Pinocembrine concentration varied between 2 and 3 mg/kg (Bogdanov, 1989). Berahia et ah (1993) analyzed sunflower honey samples and detected six flavone/flavols, four flavanone/ flavols, and pinocembrin, of which pinocembrin is the main flavonoid. The flavonoids in sunflower honey and propolis were characterized and assessed for their effects on hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes and benzo [fl]pyrene-DNA adduct formation (Sabatier et ah, 1992 Siess et ah, 1996). [Pg.108]

Nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are environmental contaminants which have been detected in airborne particulates, coal fly ash, diesel emission and carbon black photocopier toners. These compounds are metabolized Tn vitro to genotoxic agents through ring oxidation and/or nitroreduction. To evaluate the potential risk of Ebro river sediments, the concentrations detected were compared to actual legislation. The WFD does not specifically address sediment management [95]. In contrast to this, the Canadian sediment quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life [96] provide data for different types of sediments and include 33 compounds, PAHs and DDTs among them. Sometimes orthogonal offline SPE steps were used prior to online SPE LC/MS/MS. These preparation steps were used to remove interference and concentrate samples. In an application to measure urinary N7-(benzo[a]pyren-6-yl)guanine (BP-6-N7Gua), a biomarker for exposure to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a two-step offline SPE was first performed using Sep-Pak C8 (Waters, Milford, Massachusetts) and Strata SCX (Phenomenex, Torrance, California) cartridges to obtain high sensitivity (Chen et al. 2005). The extracts were applied to an online reversed phase SPE LC/MS system. The lower limit of detection was 2.5 fmol/mL when 10 mL of urine was used. [Pg.283]
