Purge limitations

Feed purification. Impurities that enter with the feed inevitably cause waste. If feed impurities undergo reaction, then this causes waste from the reactor, as already discussed. If the feed impurity does not undergo reaction, then it can be separated out from the process in a number of ways, as discussed in Sec. 4.1. The greatest source of waste occurs when we choose to use a purge. Impurity builds up in the recycle, and we would like it to build up to a high concentration to minimize waste of feed materials and product in the purge. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is an alternative to the colorimetric method. Removal of metal chlorides from the bottoms of the Hquid-phase ethylene chlorination process has been studied (43). Residues from this process can also be recovered by evaporation, decomposition at high temperatures, and distillation (45). A review of the by-products produced in the different manufacturing processes has also been performed (46). For the same production capacity, the oxygen-based process requires fewer reactors, all of which operate in parallel and are exposed to reaction gas of the same composition. However, the use of purge reactors in series for an air-based process in conjunction with the associated energy recovery system increases the overall complexity of the unit. Given the same degree of automation, the operation of an oxygen-based unit is simpler and easier if the air-separation plant is outside the battery limits of the ethylene oxide process (97). [Pg.460]

The comparison made in Section 6.1 demonstrates the important effect the amount of purge has on the performance of the carbon canister in terms of limiting the amoimt of HC release. This effect is also shown in the data presented in Fig. 21. In this example, the vehicle has been subjected to the same test cycle sequence as before, but in this case two different levels of purging are examined. Also, a two liter canister is used on the vehicle for the testing at both purge levels, in order to see the effect of purge level on a single canister volume. [Pg.260]
