Vacuum pvunps that are used to pump flammable, corrosive, or toxic gases must be handled with care. These gases can accumulate in the pump oils and present a maintenance hazard. 

Control Room. The control room location can be critical to the efficient operation of a faciHty. One prime concern is to locate it the maximum distance from the most ha2ardous units. These units are usually the units where LPG or other flammables, eg, hydrocarbons that are heavier than air, can be released and accumulate at grade level. Deadly explosions can occur if a pump seal on a light-ends system fails and the heavier-than-air hydrocarbons coUect and are ignited by a flammable source. Also, the sulfur recovery unit area should be kept at a healthy distance away as an upset can cause deadly fumes to accumulate.

It should not be assumed that just because there is no seal, sealless pumps are always safer than pumps with seals, even with the advanced technology now available in sealless pumps. Use sealless pumps with considerable caution when handling hazardous or flammable liquids.

Wash several times with cold H2O to remove alcohol and HCl and dry over CaCl2. It is important to dry well before distilling in vacuo. In addition to the fluoroplastics and fluororubbers already described other fluoropolymers have been marketed. Polymers of hexafluoropropylene oxide are marketed by Du Pont (Krytox). These materials have a low molecular weight (2000-7000) and are either oils or greases. The oils are uses as lubricants, heat transfer fluids and non-flammable oils for diffusion pumps. The greases are also used as lubricants. They have good heat and oil resistance but it is said that explosions may result from contact with the surfaces aluminium or magnesium cuttings. 

Landfill disposal of certain categories of solid waste may result in gas generation, mainly methane, and a highly polluted leachate. The methane may be drawn off, to avoid a flammable hazard on- or off-site. The leachate is pumped off for treatment. 

Review dikes, impoundments and spacing for tanks storing flammable materials. A sump inside a dike facilitates the collection of small spills. Sump drains or pumps can direct material to a safe and environmentally acceptable place. See the latest issue of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 30. 

Many leaks have been discussed under other headings, including leaks that occurred during maintenance (Chapter 1), as the result of human error (Chapter 3), or as the result of overfilling storage tanks (Section 5.1). Other leaks have occurred as the result of pipe or vessel failures (Chapter 9), while leaks of liquefied flammable gas are discussed in Chapter 8 and leaks from pumps and relief valves in Chapter 10. 

The system is a storage tank designed to hold a flammable liquid under a low positive nitrogen pressure (see Figure 5.1). This pressure is controlled by PICA-1. A relief valve is fitted which operates if overpressurization occurs. Liquid is fed to the tank from a tank truck, and is subsequently supplied to the process by the pump P-1.

The synthesis of aromatic amines is an active and important area of research.2 Many methods are available in the literature for the synthesis of these compounds. Though some of these are widely used, still they have limitations based on safety or handling considerations.
