Prozac - Fluoxetine hydrochloride

Prozac (Fluoxetine hydrochloride) differs from compound A in having an —NHCH3 group in place of —N(CH3)2. [Pg.668]

The older generation of drags are less desirable than the new selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, because they have many actions in the body other than their antidepressant effect. Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride) is among this group. Other trade names in this group are Celexa, Paxil, and Zoloft. [Pg.54]

Another example in which the excipient reacts with the API is the reaction between lactose and fluoxetine hydrochloride (refer to Figure A15-6 in the Addendum of this chapter). This is a typical example of the Maillard reaction [9]. Another example of the Maillard reaction is presented where Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride) and two generic drug products of Prozac were compared at accelerated conditions (40°C/75% RH), and the amount of degradation products (analyzed by HPLC) were found to be very different between the studied formulations (refer to Table 15-2) [10]. The authors... [Pg.685]

Fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac) is a widely prescribed antidepressant drug introduced by Eh Lilly Co in 1986 It differs from Compound A in having an —NHCH3 group in place of —N(CH3)2 What IS the structure of Prozac" ... [Pg.990]

The most widely known SSRIs are fluoxetine hydrochloride (4, Prozac , Lilly), sertraline hydrochloride (5, Zoloft , Pfizer) and paroxetine hydrochloride (6, Paxil , GSK). Fluoxetine (4, Prozac ) was the first SSRl approved and effected a revolutionary change in the treatment of depression. In 2000, it was the most widely prescribed antidepressant drug in the United States with worldwide sales of 2.58B. Sertraline (5, Zoloft ) has been available in the United States since 1992 and had worldwide sales of 2.14B in 2000. Compared to fluoxetine (4), it has a shorter duration of action and fewer CNS activating side-effects such as nervousness and anxiety. Paroxetine (6, Paxil ) generated worldwide sales of 2.35B in 2000 and has a relatively benign side-effect profile, which favors its use with elderly patients. [Pg.128]

Brown et al. achieved a highly enantioselective synthesis of (.S )-fluoxetine hydrochloride (61) (Prozac), an antidepressant medicine26 (Scheme 4.3v). Reduction of (3-chloropropiophenone (62) with (+)-Ipc2BCl provided the secondary alcohol 63 in 97% ee and greater than 99% ee after single recrystallization. Mit-sunobu reaction of the alcohol with p-trifluoromethylphenol afforded the ether 64, which was then converted to (S)-(+)-fluoxetine hydrochloride (61) after subsequent treatment with excess methylamine and a solution of hydrogen chloride in ether. [Pg.185]

Fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac, Fontex, etc. Figure 17.2) is an antidepressant of the SSRI class. As a structural analogue of serotonin, it competes for its re-uptake at the... [Pg.259]

Whilst the Maillard reaction between lactose and primary amines is well known, the same reaction between the secondary amine fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac ) and lactose has recently been reported (Wirth et al. 1998). In the solid-state water content, lubricant concentration and temperature were also found to influence the degradation. In addition to the chemical reactions noted above, the drug may also interact to form a molecular compound. For example, solid-state interactions between trimethoprim and antimicrobial paraben esters to form a 1 1 molecular compound has been reported (Pedersen et al. 1994). [Pg.223]

Fluoxetine hydrochloride (brand name Prozac) An antidepressant that functions as an SSRI and is prescribed for depression that is severe enough to impair daily functioning. This medication is also used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It should not be used with an MAO inhibitor. Some common side effects include abnormal dreams, abnonnal ejaculation, decreased orgasmic functioning, agitation, and headaches. [Pg.302]

In August 2004, fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), was found in drinking water in the United Kingdom. How it got there, no one knows. Is it possible that mind-altering drugs might someday be added to drinking water the same way that fluoride is added to prevent caries ... [Pg.4]

There are several SSRI inhibitors. Their chemical structures are different but they have similar modes of action, namely binding to the SERT. However, they have different pharmacokinetic parameters such as half-life, and differences in adverse effects and drug interactions [54]. Fluoxetine was the first drug of the class, approved in the U.S. in 1987. It is a chiral molecule and the racemic mixture is used as the hydrochloride salt (Prozac , Lilly). It has been approved and marketed in more than 90 countries and used by more than... [Pg.199]
