Major histocompatibility complex, MHC several closely linked genetic loci in vertebrates which encode cell-surface glycoproteins and serum proteins known as histocompatibility antigens. In adchtion to the MHC, which have been found in all vertebrates examined for them, there are other cell surface antigens which have been little studied and are referred to as minor histocompatibility antigens (complexes).
