Protein-electrolyte complexes

Other molecular thermodynamic models for protein-reverse micelle complexes have also emerged. Bratko et al. [171] presented a model for phase transfer of proteins in RMs. The shell and core model was combined with the Poisson-Boltzmann approximation for the protein-RM complex and for the protein-free RM. The increase in entropy of counterions released from RMs on solubilization of a protein was the main contribution to the decrease in free energy of com-plexation. Good agreement was found with SANS results of Sheu et al. [151] for cytochrome C solubilization and the effect of electrolytes on it. However, this model assumes that filled and empty RMs are of the same size, independent of salt strength and pH, which is not true according to experimental evidence available since then. [Pg.143]

A 0-9% salt solution is considered to be isotonic with blood. Other electrolytes present include bicarbonate ions (HCOj ) and small amounts of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sulphate and organic acid ions. Included among the complex compounds and present in smaller amounts are phospholipids, cholesterols, natural fats, proteins, glucose and amino acids. Under normal conditions the extracellular body fluid is slightly alkaline with a pH of 7-4. ... [Pg.472]

The use of alkali and alkaline earth group metal ions, especially those of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, for maintenance of electrolyte balance and for signaling and promotion of enzyme activity and protein function are not discussed in this text. Many of these ions, used for signaling purposes in the exciting area of neuroscience, are of great interest. In ribozymes, RNAs with catalytic activity, solvated magnesium ions stabilize complex secondary and tertiary molecular structure. Telomeres, sequences of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that are implicated in cell death or immortalization, require potassium ions for structural stabilization. [Pg.371]

Instruments are offered in the market for clinical determination of electrolytes in blood, plasma or serum. One of them, for example, carries out simultaneous determinations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, hematocrit and pH. The cations are of the free type (see Section m.A) and are measured with specific ion-selective electrodes. In complex matrices such as blood or its derived fractions the concentration of free Ca and Mg is affected by the pH of the solution, for example, a slight change of pH will produce or neutralize anionic sites in the proteins, binding or releasing these cations furthermore, the response of the Mg-selective electrode is also affected by the concentration of free Ca(II). The correction... [Pg.275]
