Protective polymeric, soluble

A sterically protected, water-soluble synthetic iron porphyrin could provide a readily available biomimetic catalyst for both basic research and potential industrial applications. Such a synthetic hemin might be superior to the enzyme, in that being a small molecule it could interact, with the polymeric lignin molecule more readily than can ligninase. [Pg.519]

In a suspension polymerization, monomer is suspended ia water as 0.1—5 mm droplets, stabilized by protective coUoids or suspending agents. Polymerization is initiated by a monomer-soluble initiator and takes place within the monomer droplets. The water serves as both the dispersion medium and a heat-transfer agent. Particle size is controlled primarily by the rate of agitation and the concentration and type of suspending aids. The polymer is obtained as small beads of about 0.1—5 mm in diameter, which are isolated by filtration or centrifugation. [Pg.268]

Suspension Polymerization. This method (10) might be considered as a number of bulk polymerizations carried out simultaneously in the monomer droplets with water acting as a heat-transfer medium. A monomer-soluble initiator, eg, a peroxide or azo compound, and a protective coUoid like poly(vinyl alcohol) or bentonite, are requited. After completion of the polymerization, the excess of monomer(s) is steam stripped, and the beads of polymer are collected and washed on a centrifiige or filter and dried on a vibrating screen or by means of an expeUer—extmder. [Pg.474]

The invasion of particles can be eliminated either by using solids-free systems or by formation of a competent filter cake on the rock surface. If the components forming the filter cake are correctly chosen and blended, they will form a very effective downhole filter element. This ensures that colloidal sized clays or polymeric materials are retained within the filter cake and do not enter the formation. Further protection is provided by ensuring that a thin filter cake is formed due to low dynamic and static filtrate losses. Thus, the cake may be easily removed when the well is brought into production. Additionally, the filter cake can be soluble in acid or oil. [Pg.703]

Adsorption behavior and the effect on colloid stability of water soluble polymers with a lower critical solution temperature(LCST) have been studied using polystyrene latices plus hydroxy propyl cellulose(HPC). Saturated adsorption(As) of HPC depended significantly on the adsorption temperature and the As obtained at the LCST was 1.5 times as large as the value at room temperature. The high As value obtained at the LCST remained for a long time at room temperature, and the dense adsorption layer formed on the latex particles showed strong protective action against salt and temperature. Furthermore, the dense adsorption layer of HPC on silica particles was very effective in the encapsulation process with polystyrene via emulsion polymerization in which the HPC-coated silica particles were used as seed. [Pg.131]

The immobilization of metal nanoparticles with a water-soluble polymeric material such as PVP has also been described. The groups of Choukroun and Chaudret have described the hydrogenation of benzene in a biphasic mixture with PVP-protected native Rh nanoparticles synthesized from the organometal-... [Pg.242]

Figure 1 Schematic structures of micelle and liposome, their formation and loading with a contrast agent, (a) A micelle is formed spontaneously in aqueous media from an amphiphilic compound (1) that consists of distinct hydrophilic (2) and hydrophobic (3) moieties. Hydrophobic moieties form the micelle core (4). Contrast agent (asterisk gamma- or MR-active metal-loaded chelating group, or heavy element, such as iodine or bromine) can be directly coupled to the hydrophobic moiety within the micelle core (5), or incorporated into the micelle as an individual monomeric (6) or polymeric (7) amphiphilic unit, (b) A liposome can be prepared from individual phospholipid molecules (1) that consists of a bilayered membrane (2) and internal aqueous compartment (3). Contrast agent (asterisk) can be entrapped in the inner water space of the liposome as a soluble entity (4) or incorporated into the liposome membrane as a part of monomeric (5) or polymeric (6) amphiphilic unit (similar to that in case of micelle). Additionally, liposomes can be sterically protected by amphiphilic derivatization with PEG or PEG-like polymer (7) [1]. Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (FT-IFRAS) is applied to the study of corrosion protection of copper by an organic coating. Poly-N-vinyliroidazole (PVI(D) and poly-4(5)-vinylimidazole (PVI(4)) are demonstrated to be effective new polymeric anti-corrosion agents for copper at elevated temperatures. Oxidation of copper is suppressed even at 400° C. PVI(1) and PVI(4) are more effective anti-oxidants than the most commonly used corrosion inhibitors, benzotriazole and undecyllmldazole, at elevated temperatures. These new polymeric agents are water soluble and easy to treat the metal surface. [Pg.268]

In a negative working resist the monomer is first polymerized over the entire copper surface, then the protective polymer layer is irradiated through the mask. In the irradiated areas the polymer is degraded into smaller units and becomes soluble it can then be removed by treatment with a suitable solvent and the etching bath will attack this exposed copper. [Pg.194]

The main applications for PVA are in textile sizing, adhesives, polymerization stabilizers, paper coating, poly(vinyl butyial), and PVA fibers. In terms of percentage, and omitting the production of PVA not isolated prior to conversion into poly(vinyl butyral), the principal applications are textile sizes, at 30% adhesives, including use as a protective colloid, at 25% fibers, at 15% paper sizes, at 15%, poly(vinyl butyral), at 10% and others, at 5%, which include water-soluble films, nonwoven fabric binders, thickeners, slow-release binders for fertilizer, photoprinting plates, sponges for cosmetic, and health care applications. [Pg.1679]
