The development of these technologies can be followed in the proceedings of the professional institutions and the many magazines, some available free. You should define the state of technological awareness in the company and consider how this affects the plant layout. 

As planned maintenance encompasses all types covered within the preventive or scheduled systems, this can be examined in more detail. In preparing a planned maintenance system, all the available sources of information should be used. These include manufacturers and suppliers literature, trade associations, professional institutions, knowledge and experience from within the department and history and feedback from previous work for the specific type of equipment.

My main advice to the student undertaking a chemical engineering design project is don t work in a vacuum . By this I mean obtain information and help from as many sources as you can find. Do not assume that you alone can, or should, complete this project unaided. Talk to the project supervisor, other lecturers in your department, lecturers in other departments and at other universities and colleges, other students, technicians, librarians, professional engineers, research students, officers of the professional institutions, etc. Some of these people may not be able to help, or may not want to however, it is usually possible to find some helpful and sympathetic persons who can offer... 

My first point has therefore to be aimed directly at employers they must recognize the paramount need for continuing education of practicing engineers. Universities and professional institutions are more than willing to provide courses and opportunities for mature study. Short courses on highly specific topics, chosen to give an up-to-date survey on current techniques, deserve more support than they get at present. 

To enable those who cannot directly conduct appropriate tests to understand necessary methodology so that they can successfully subcontract required evaluations to outside professional institutions. By doing so, it is expected that use of highly hazardous reactive chemicals can be decreased and reactive chemicals can be used under safer conditions.

Health outcome data and parameters are the third major source of data for health assessments. The identification, review, and evaluation of health outcome parameters are interactive processes involving ATSDR, data source generators, and the community involved. Health outcome data are community-specific and may include databases at the local, state, and national level, as well as data from private health care organizations and professional institutions and associations. Databases to be considered include medical records, morbidity and mortality data, tumor and disease registries, birth statistics, and surveillance data. Relevant health outcome data play an important role in assessing the public health implications associated with a hazardous waste site and in determining which follow-up health activities are needed.

The members of the Watt Committee are 61 British professional institutions. It is run by an Executive on which all member institutions are represented on a rota basis. Networks and specialist groups within professional institutions are ideal media for the dissemination of data of all types on a technology. They thus provide ready opportunities for those wishing to have an introduction to a technology, and to meet people with experience of its application, access to funding opportunities and other technology transfer activities. 

The sector should begin to develop guidance without delay to incorporate the latest knowledge on preventing loss of primary containment and on inhibiting escalation if loss occurs. This is likely to require the sector to collaborate with the professional institutions and trade associations... 

Proactive involvement in professional institutions, industrial research organizations, or the production and development of lEC 61508 and associated standards by both self-assessors and external consultants would assist in this respect. The authors, for example, have made major contributions to the Standard and to a number of the second-tier documents described in Chapters 8—10. Thus, the credibility of third-party assessment bodies or consultants does need to be addressed vigorously.
