But the times were becoming stormy with the advance of the revolutionary movement, and Lavoisier, as a noble, a man of wealth, and one who had received many royal commissions, became more and more unacceptable to the radical element of the commune. The existence of the Academy of Sciences, as well as of all other institutions operating under royal charters, was threatened. Here Lavoisier proved his devotion to the Academy by his persistent efforts to maintain its integrity. He freely advanced money to sustain its scientific work, and endeavored to awaken a feeling of respect for its services. His efforts were futile and in August, 1793, the Academy was abolished by a decree of the National Assembly. [Pg.517]

In the United Kingdom the British Standards Institution (the BSl) is an independent body operating under a Royal Charter. More than half of its standards-writing income is derived from the sale of its standards the remainder is provided by industry on a membership basis, matched almost equally by a government contribution. The BSl also derives considerable income from separate divisions responsible for certification and testing services, Since the greatest proportion of all British standards produced are now identical to either ISO or CEN standards, the committee structure of the BSl has been modified to reflect that of the international and regional bodies, The same committees are responsible for input to the ISO and the CEN as well as the preparation of national standards, even when these are additional to or different from the international ones. [Pg.114]

Although responsibility for chemical warfare research rested with different departments, British scientists did not follow this division of labour in practice instead, they established informal networks and channels of communication which allowed them to coordinate, as best they could, their work throughout the war, and advance their professional careers thereafter. Appreciating the potential limitations of being integrated into the military and ministerial hierarchy, scientists used some of the newly created departments and expert committees on chemical warfare for the exchange of information and avoidance of duplication, for example at the War Office, the Ministry of Munitions, the Royal Society, and the Medical Research Committee, the predecessor of the Medical Research Council (MRC), founded under Royal Charter in 1920. ... [Pg.29]
