Composite processing technique

Ease of cure, easy removal of parts from mold surfaces, and wide availabiHty have made polyesters the first choice for many fiber-reinforced composite molders. Sheet mol ding compound, filament winding, hand lay-up, spray up, and pultmsion are all weU adapted to the use of polyesters. Choosing the best polyester resin and processing technique is often a challenge. The polyester must be a type that is weU adapted to the processing method and must have the final mechanical properties requked by the part appHcation. Table 1 Hsts the deskable properties for a number of fiber-reinforced composite fabrication methods. [Pg.18]

Because of the various characteristics of composite laminates, it is difficult to determine a strength criterion in which all failure modes and their interactions are properly accounted for. Moreover, the verification of a proposed strength criterion is greatly complicated by scatter in measured strengths caused by inconsistent processing techniques (that... [Pg.238]

Development of several new siloxane-imide copolymers for commercial applications have also been reported by Lee 181) and Berger58). Although no information was given in terms of the chemical compositions of these materials, most of these polymers were reported to be processable by solution or melt processing techniques, most probably due to their high siloxane contents. However, due to the presence of low (—20 to —120 °C) and high (>230 °C) temperature Tg s, it was clear that multiphase copolymers have been synthesized. Molecular weights and thermal stabilities, etc, were not reported. [Pg.35]

Multilayer coatings or hlms have been proven to be successful in various applications, especially for wear protection. In multilayer systems, the intrinsic stress can be effectively reduced by designing interface number and composite materials in terms of the application and process technique. Therefore, the multilayer technique by which a specihe functional composite is able to approach received more attention for many years [17,18]. Here we introduce the results on microscale friction and scratch of DLC/DLC and Fe-N/TiN multilayers. [Pg.200]

In addition to the processing technique, the properties of the oxides also changed by preparing them in a composite way. Arefian et al. [18] have synthesized SnO/ ZnO nanocomposite using the sonochemical method and studied the effects of temperature and power on the morphologies generated. Recently Mg doped ZnO... [Pg.196]

Recently there has been a growing emphasis on the use of transient methods to study the mechanism and kinetics of catalytic reactions (16, 17, 18). These transient studies gained new impetus with the introduction of computer-controlled catalytic converters for automobile emission control (19) in this large-scale catalytic process the composition of the feedstream is oscillated as a result of a feedback control scheme, and the frequency response characteristics of the catalyst appear to play an important role (20). Preliminary studies (e.g., 15) indicate that the transient response of these catalysts is dominated by the relaxation of surface events, and thus it is necessary to use fast-response, surface-sensitive techniques in order to understand the catalyst s behavior under transient conditions. [Pg.80]

While conductivities of nanocarbons dispersed in polymers fall short of those of metals, a variety of applications can be unlocked by turning an insulating matrix into a conductor, which requires only small volume fractions that can therefore keep the system viscosity at a level compatible with composite processing techniques. Of particular interest are novel functionalities of these conductive matrices that exploit the presence of a conductive network in them, such as structural health monitoring (SHM) based on changes in electrical resistance of the nanocarbon network as it is mechanically deformed [30]. [Pg.233]

Early research on high temperature polymers concentrated primarily on thermal stability and paid little attention to their processability and cost. However, for a polymer to be successful as a c< miercially viable structural matrix, it must exhibit a favorable combination of processability, performance characteristics, and price. In particular, a desirable high temperature polymeric system for coatings, composites, and adhesives applications must exhibit adaptability to conventional processing techniques at low temperature and pressure, should exhibit good mechanical properties, acceptable repairability, weatherability, and cost effectiveness. [Pg.379]

Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a hybrid of two polymer processing techniques we have already described transfer molding and reaction injection molding (RIM). The key difference is that a reinforcement is incorporated during molding to create a composite. [Pg.798]
