Process of reaction

Chemical, semichemical, or mechanical breakdown of pulping material into fibers Removal of pulp impurities, cleaning and thickening of pulp fiber mixture Addition of chemicals in a staged process of reaction and washing increases whiteness and brightness of pulp, if necessary At nonintegrated pulp mills, pulp is dried and bundled into bales for transport to a paper mill... [Pg.864]

Some economies are possible if equilibrium is assumed between selected compartments, an equal fugacity being assignable. This is possible if the time for equilibration is short compared to the time constant for the dominant processes of reaction or advection. For example, the rate of chemical uptake by fish from water can often be ignored (and thus need not be measured or known within limits) if the chemical has a life time of hundreds of days since the uptake time is usually only a few days. This is equivalent to the frequently used "steady state" assumption in chemical kinetics in which the differential equation for a short lived intermediate species is set to zero, thus reducing the equation to algebraic form. When the compartment contains a small amount of chemical or adjusts quickly to its environment, it can be treated algebraically. [Pg.180]

The wide diversity and the large number of apparatuses used for investigations and processing of reactions in SCFs make a systematization difficult. They have been developed during the time from the first digester by Denys Papin in 1680 to Ipatiev s high-pressure bomb [198] and up to the first... [Pg.139]

A beauty of thermodynamics is that it is not concerned with the detailed processes, and its predictions are independent of such details. Thermodynamics predicts the extent of a reaction when equilibrium is reached, but it does not address or care about reaction mechanism, i.e., how the reaction proceeds. For example, thermodynamics predicts that falling tree leaves would decompose and, in the presence of air, eventually end up as mostly CO2 and H2O. The decomposition could proceed under dry conditions, or under wet conditions, or in the presence of bacteria, or in a pile of tree leaves that might lead to fire. The reaction paths and kinetics would be very different under these various conditions. Because thermodynamics does not deal with the processes of reactions, it cannot provide insight on reaction mechanisms. [Pg.4]

When a solid is reacting with a gas stream flowing over its surface and the reaction rate is dependent on the partial pressure of the reacting gas, the over-all picture of the process of reaction may be represented as shown in Fig. 6. The general over-all rate and mass transfer relations can be expressed as follows ... [Pg.171]

The ring opening polymerization of cyclic monomers that yield thermoplastic polymers of interest in composite processing is reviewed. In addition, the chemistry, kinetics, and rheology of the ring opening polymerization of caprolactam to nylon 6 are presented. Finally, the rheo-kinetics modelsfor polycaprolactam are applied to the composite process of reaction injection pultrusion. [Pg.41]

However, the beauty of Slater s theory is that it gives a very clear description of the process of reaction, which is easy to visualize that is, the molecule splits up if some bond(s), bond angle(s) or a combination of both is extended too far . [Pg.161]

These observations on the aqueous phase are consistent with the concept of the adsorption of water-reducing admixtures on to the initial hydrates of C3A and C3S with a corresponding modification of the normal process of reaction of C3A with gypsum to form ettringite and a delay in hydration of the C3S phase. [Pg.41]

Historically, it dates from the early 1920 s. Indeed, in 1924 U.R. Evans proposed an equation showing the comparative influence of chemical and physical phenomena on the growth rate of a chemical compound layer. Unfortunately, its importance for understanding the essence of the process of reaction diffusion was not estimated properly at that time. Moreover, even now many researchers, especially physicists and metallurgists, tend to underestimate its significance. [Pg.310]

Further, as the reverse process of reaction (T6) is merely one path for the deactivation of photogenerated OH, it is clear that kTlIabs/ic > fc T6[Ti(IV) / OH ]>lj and that, under these conditions, equation (9.53) simplifies to ... [Pg.320]

The second technique (method I of ref. 264) is to measure the relaxation. Here the infrared emission is observed from different points downstream from where the reagents are mixed in a fast-flow system. Even at the shortest times, rotational relaxation is complete, but the relaxation of the vibrational states can be followed and the distributions extrapolated back to yield a set of Rv. Pacey and Polanyi [265] have found small, but significant, differences between the Rv derived from a simple extrapolation and those determined using an analysis that allowed for the concurrent processes of reaction, diffusion, flow, radiation, and deactivation. Using a large-capacity sorption... [Pg.56]

Consider an ensemble of enzyme molecules or membrane proteins in the coupled processes of reactions and vectorial flows. Such systems consist of a set of cycles and subcycles of reactions and transport processes. For a flow in cycle k as Jk (k = a,b,..., h), the first two steady-state flows are given by the following relations... [Pg.564]

It must be noticed that, so far as the number of molecules has been investigated, it appears that the mechanism of reaction is in general very simple, and nearly always mono- or bi-molecular. If an equation, in order to express a process of reaction quantitatively, shows the interaction of several molecules, it is probably in reality a combination of processes taking place consecutively. The action of hydriodic acid on hydrogen peroxide,... [Pg.200]

In some cases this opinion in favour of simple processes of reaction occurring by stages is directly confirmed by experiment. This is so with the combustion of phos-phoretted hydrogen, PH3, which, taken as a whole, is represented by the equation... [Pg.201]

Ten types of elementary processes were defined, which included all the reaction types characteristic for the pyrolysis of alkanes. To speed up the process of reaction generation, five basic structural attributes were attached to each species. These attributes described the type of the species (molecule, radical), the length, the saturation, etc. The application of attributes enabled the sensible application of reaction types, since, for example, molecules do not take part in radical recombination reactions, and short radicals cannot take part in 1,4-isomerization. Where possible, rate parameters were taken from databases and others were estimated on the basis of ten rules which were applied according to the type of reaction and reaction partners. [Pg.306]

Considering the thermodynamic parameters of the reaction, it has been determined that the silicic acid with a hexacoordinated atom of silicon H2[Si(OH)6] formed in die process of reaction displaces ammonium ion from phenolates, so that this acid is stronger than catechol. This is in agreement with our experimental data at the beginning of the reaction process the decrease in the pH of the reaction mixture from 7.16 to 5.85 was observed before the pH became constant. [Pg.598]

The stability of the M—S bond, where M is a heavy metal (e.g., Hg, Sn, Pb), gives a route to metal sulfides by the addition and subsequent elimination processes of reaction (h) (11.5.1). For example, when bis(tributyltin) oxide is heated in CS2 at 145°C, bis(tributyltin) sulfide is formed in 99% yield ... [Pg.723]

In literature the significant number of submitted data is devoted to the processing of reactions of volatile halogenides with OH-groups on surfaces of silica and alumina in the temperature range of sample preparation 200 800°C [3,5,42 44]. The interaction in the... [Pg.214]
