Some applications of redox reactions to metabolic processes

Redox is the general name given to the changes taking place when oxidation and reduction take place in chemical reactions. Because electrons are transferred from one atom or group to another, these reactions can be followed using electrical detection devices. Sometimes the tendency of materials to be oxidized or reduced can be expressed in terms of redox potentials and measured in volts. [Pg.153]

When anything burns in air or oxygen, it is by a process of oxidation/reduction. Natural gas CH4 burns in air  [Pg.153]

The burning of the body s fuel, glucose, involves oxidation/reduction reactions  [Pg.153]

3 Some applications of redox reactions to metabolic processes [Pg.153]

In recent years newly invented detection devices have enabled scientists to investigate the minute quantities of materials that are involved in our metabolic processes. The super oxide anion (Op is one of the enemies of the cells of our bodies. It is generated as a by-product of respiration with oxygen and is also made by specially activated white blood cells. In normal healthy people the body has its own way of disposing of these ions using of an enzyme called super oxide [Pg.153]
