The first half of the chapter deals with broad issues leading up to installation, commissioning and operating plant, while the second part presents an example of a Process Intensification Methodology , in this case based upon Britest and BHR Group procedures (see below). In this case it is used to select an intensified chenucal reactor.

To this sense, conceptual process synthesis plays a key role and constitutes a major approach for process intensification to achieve the multifunctional and microstructured devices. In this work, a systematic methodology based on conceptual process synthesis for process intensification is presented. 

The methodology of conceptual process synthesis for process intensification is focused on the generation of the novel concepts and techniques for the processing tasks. The methodology of conceptual process synthesis for process intensification is illustrated in Figure 1.

In its broadest sense, process intensification can be defined as a series of methodologies aimed at reducing the capital cost associated with chemical processing, by removing existing limitations . 

This chapter has introduced the concept of process intensification (PI) as a collection of methodologies aimed at reducing the capital cost of chemical processing. Examples have been given of successful and less successful strategies. The area of microreaction technology has also been situated for some cases, an attempt has been made to quantify the degree of PI achievable.

There is significant work on using process INTEGRATION methodologies to identify the best places to site process INTENSIFICATION unit operations. Much of this work is co-ordinated at the Centre for Process Integration, University of Manchester, UK (see Appendix 5).

The Laboratory of Process Systems Engineering is active in teaching and research into processes engineering. Research topics within the group include methodologies in process research and design, processes intensification and modelling and simulation. 

Currently, there is a strong emphasis on the synthesis of novel functional polymers shaped on a nano scale (Chapter 19) and the development of sustainable production processes (Chapter 21). The latter includes process intensification as a methodology, the use of green solvents, and the use of renewable resources. Many of the new processes under development are focusing on one or more of these topics, for which the use of supercritical fluids is currently being implemented on an industrial scale. 

In this chapter, the process intensification has been presented from a chemical engineering perspective. It shows the tremendous scope for industrial applications in this area. After examining the reported definitions and classifications of PI, an attempt has been made to suggest a classification methodology based on multifunctionality, novelty in devices, and alternate-configurations. 

Having established a high level methodology to identify intensification factors required for success, the next five sub-sections will to go through the various fundamental reaction engineering processes by means of illustrative examples and discuss differences between a mega- and a micro-scale operation.
