Process development unit testing

Integrated Testing. Although the individual steps of the process have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments, testing of the entire system is necessary in order to proceed along the path to commercialization. The integrated testing is currently planned to be comprised of three sequential steps, i.e., the laboratory model, the process development unit (PDU), and the "pilot-scale" unit. 

Characteristic data on ash behaviour can be obtained by laboratory tests and used for planning, e.g., run conditions for tests with pilot or PDU (process development unit) equipment. 

The project goal is to optimise the operation of the process and interpret data, which will be used for the construction of a Process Development Unit-scale CFBG test facility with gas engine application. 

The process development unit (PDU) was fed with 2 species of wood chips a softwood (mainly spruce, Picea abies Karst.) and a hardwood (beech, Fagus sylvatica L.). The hardwood was supplied by IVD as reference fuel, that has been tested in other combustion equipment for reference. 

In a properly designed industrial scale reactor, feedstock conversion is achieved at a certain throughput capacity. In order to scale-up the reactor, heat and mass transport phenomena must be studied. This includes heat transfer phenomena, feedstock conversion kinetics and the movement of particles inside the reactor. In this work, both experimental and theoretical studies were carried out to investigate these phenomena. Two different configurations of moving and stirred bed reactors, the batch scale rotative and a continuous feed Process Development Unit (PDU), have been used to generate the data in accordance with the principle of similarity. A dynamic model to scale-up the reactor was then tested. 

This molten salt gasification process is the basis for the Rockwell International molten salt coal gasification process. A 900-kg-h l (1 ton/h) process development unit pilot plant has been built and is being tested under contract from the Department of Energy. This plant includes the gasifier and a complete sodium carbonate recovery and regeneration system.

The working range of an analytical method is the interval between the upper and lower concentrations of the analyte in the sample for which it has been demonstrated that the method has acceptable precision, accuracy and linearity. This interval is normally derived from linearity studies and depends on the intended application of the method. However, validating over a range wider than actually needed provides confidence that the routine standard levels are well removed from nonlinear response concentrations, and allows quantitation of crude samples in support of process development. The range is normally expressed in the same units as the test results obtained by the analytical method. 

Any serious software developer will follow a formal software development methodology that includes the documentation necessary to support the software at each development step. A quality audit of the software developer will determine the adequacy of testing performed and whether the tests plan, procedures, and results are properly documented. The quality audit must include an inspection of the unit testing process.
