Private pensions

A more prophylactic protection against the economic dislocation of a layoff is the pension and retirement fund. Perhaps more important than state law, however, in determining one s legal rights under a pension plan is ERISA—the 1974 Employee Retirement Income Security Act. ERISA, by altering the requirements which employee retirement benefit plans must meet in order for an employers contributions to qualify for tax deductibility, has standardized private pension plans in ways most favorable to covered employees. Tax savings and protections are also available under either a qualified group retirement plan or an H.R. 10, Keogh, or I.R.A. plan wherein an individual may set up a tax-deferred retirement fund for himself.

Pension reforms in Europe will be the main factor driving the development of the Eurozone market for inflation derivatives and for real assets in general beyond their current niche market state. As the natural demand for real assets grows in parallel with the development of a private pensions market, corporate payers will emerge, with associated issuance and swaps, that is, analogous to the current state in the UK market. However, the presence of a larger number of players (payers, receivers, and market makers) means that the market will likely be more liquid and more efficient than the current UK IL swap market.

In 2002-3 there were 158.5 million community PBS prescriptions -132.7 million (83.7%) to concessional patients (pensioners, seniors, repatriation health beneficiaries) and 25.9 million to general patients. In addition, about 42.1 million prescriptions did not attract a subsidy - 26 million below the co-pa)unent threshold and about 16.1 million private prescriptions, that is, prescriptions for drugs not listed on the PBSorRPBS, for which the consumer pays the full cost of the medicine. Thus 79.0% of prescriptions were for items subsidised through the PBS. 

In addition, increasing investor power - due to a growing share of private shareholders and bundling of their interests in mutual and pension funds - amplifies the above reasons more powerful investors will be less willing to cope with a below average return and will as a result be more willing to abandon an underperforming stock. This will intensify the pressure on the stock price. 

Since January 2002, the new pension law requires private and corporate pension schemes to disclose their policies on socially responsible investment.
