The Centers central organization in Madrid is composed of the following Director, Chief of the Technical Department in the latter are the Control Room, the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology Laboratories, and seven workshops Book Restoration, Prints and Drawings, Manuscripts, Lamination, Leafcasting, Parchment, and Seals. The training mission is the direct responsibility of the Director. 

Prints and Drawings Shop. There are five restorers here three are very capable watercolorists, one works in oils, one is an expert draftsman. This shop also restores maps, broadsides, miniatures, and fans. 

The first step in the restoration process is dry cleaning with soft erasers. Old mounts or supports, usually highly acidic, are removed. Immersion in water is prescribed for removal of discoloration in the more stable forms of art on paper etchings, prints, engravings, and some drawings. For specific stains that cannot be removed with water or other solvents, bleaching agents are applied locally. Deacidification by total immersion is preferred a spray is used when this is not possible.

There are three ways to switch between 40 and 80 columns toggle the 40/80 switch and press RUN/STOP-RESTORE, press ESC-X in BASIC, or enter the command SCREEN 0 for 40 columns, or SCREEN 5 for 80 columns. Remember that these screens are independent. If you have two monitors hooked up, these commands reroute screen printing to the appropriate monitor (although both screens remain displayed). Commodore s 1902 monitor is ideal for the 128 it has built-in color composite video, split-signal composite video (as used on the rear connections of the 1701/ 1702 monitor), IBM-compatible RGB, and analog RGB (for use with the Amiga). A new column is created by LP containing M matrix entries, so the dimension NAIJ is increased in the routine to NAIJ + M and NTOT to NTOT +1, and M entries are added to the matrix arrays. The original dimensions are restored when the routine is done. If the matrix storage would be exceeded by the addition of the new entries, the routine stops and a message is printed. If the problem should be infeasible through faulty data, a message is printed describing the error and the subroutine ends. If a feasible solution is found, MON is set to zero. If no feasible solution is found it is set to one. LP uses the constant XSTART (nominal value of 10" ) as the minimum value allowed for any x in the routine. 

University of Michigan s Executive System was obtained. On this base, OOPS, an acronym for Our OPerating System, was prepared with the constraint that it have minimal impact on the existing user-program environment 101). The core-resident portion of the system was designed so that it could be flushed for a full-core user-application and reloaded automatically upon job completion from the system resident device, the 704 s 8K-word drum. Operator intervention was necessary to restore the system in the event such full-core jobs aborted. Auxiliary software was written for the IBM 1401 s role as support processor in which the machine prepared the system input tapes and printed and punched OOPS output. This tape-oriented system helped relieve the overloading of the 704 from 1962 through the installation of the next system, the CDC 3600, in late 1963, and was still in use in mid-1966 when the 704 was retired. 

Finally, since there were no general data management and file management facilities the application programs had to define and implement the necessary file structures as well as canying out any utiUty functions. These included file print utilities for debugging, file copy utiUties for back-up and file load utilities for restoring data.
