AChE-R (in purple) Naturally rare, stress-induced variant, which lacks a hydrophobic domain and is incapable of binding to ColQ or PRiMA. Aromatic aldehydes react in basic as well acidic medium. Thus vanillin and prima amines yield Schiff s bases (cf. vanillin-potassium hydroxide reagent in Volume 1 z Colored phenolates are formed at the same time. As would be expected seconda amines, indole derivatives and lysergic acid derivatives do not react. 

In a manner comparable to Christian eschatology, alchemical literature insisted on its own purificatory rituals that involved the preliminary torture, death and dismemberment of the prima materia. The canonical Catholic depiction of Christ s sacrificed body was a primary source for sixteenth and seventeenth century illustrations of the tortured body in anatomical and alchemical publications. In eflfect, the practice of Paracelsian alchemical medicine and surgery had a sacramental connotation, since the physician acted on the human body in the same manner as God worked on the great universal Macrocosmic Body. In like manner, the Paracelsian physician introduced the universal panacea, a liquid form of the philosopher s stone, into the alchemical alembic that was the Microcosmic human body. This alchemical medicine was permeated with the starry virtues of the heavens and the grace of Christ s Spirit, redeeming the body and soul of the patient by granting him not only an extended life on earth, but even eternal salvation. 

At the basis there is the tacit assumption of a reductionistic ideal. Quantum mechanics in the current version is the correct theory, and the process of extracting from the whole universe the molecule subjected to accurate calculations does not create problems. I do not object this assumption, being however aware that there are objections, mainly for the process of abstraction of one molecule from the whole universe ( see, e.g. Primas [13])... 

Others which, according to the Primas definition [13] are graceless. These graceless quantities are defined and selected with the scope of "understanding", i.e. in our terminology with the scope of giving an interpretation of the chemical phenomena.

It should be remembered that some of the established antioxidants have other metabolic roles apart from free-radical scavenging. The finding of reduced antioxidant defences in diabetes, for example, may not be prima fascie evidence of increased oxidative stress, since alternative explanations may operate. For example, this may reflect a response to reduced free-radical activity as su ested by the results of a previous study (Collier et al., 1988). In the case of ascorbate, an alternative explanation has been proposed by Davis etal. (1983), who demonstrated competitive inhibition of ascorbate uptake by glucose into human lymphocytes. This view is supported by the similar molecular structure of glucose and ascorbic acid (see Fig. 12.4) and by a report of an inverse relationship between glycaemic control and ascorbate concentrations in experimental diabetes in rats. Other investigators, however, have not demonstrated this relationship (Som etal., 1981 Sinclair etal., 1991).
