Pressure Vessel Composition

As a result of the desire for a pressure vessel material compatible with the Martian environment at the desired temperatures Hastx was chosen for the pressure vessel. HastX is known for being extremely insensitive to corrosion and carburization [Brown, W., 1992]. Theoretically, the relatively small neutronic penalty associated with Hastelloy means that any comparably transparent material (from a neutronic standpoint) could be substituted, which may be necessary if HastX and NblZr are incompatible. [Pg.35]

Batch Crystallization Batch crystalhzation has been practiced longer than any other form of ciystaUization in both atmospheric tanks, which are either static or agitated, as well as in vacuum or pressure vessels. It is still widely practiced in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry or in those applications where the capacity is veiy small. The integrity of the batch with respect to composition and history can be maintained easily and the inventoiy management is more precise than with continuous processes. The failure took place in a large water-tube boiler used for generating steam in a chemical plant. The layout of the boiler is shown in Fig. 13.1. At the bottom of the boiler is a cylindrical pressure vessel - the mud drum - which contains water and sediments. At the top of the boiler is the steam drum, which contains water and steam. The two drums are connected by 200 tubes through which the water circulates. The tubes are heated from the outside by the flue gases from a coal-fired furnace. The water in the "hot" tubes moves upwards from the mud drum to the steam drum, and the water in the "cool" tubes moves downwards from the steam drum to the mud drum. A convection circuit is therefore set up where water circulates around the boiler and picks up heat in the process. The water tubes are 10 m long, have an outside diameter of 100 mm and are 5 mm thick in the wall. They are made from a steel of composition Fe-0.18% C, 0.45% Mn, 0.20% Si. The boiler operates with a working pressure of 50 bar and a water temperature of 264°C. [Pg.133]

Originally developed for tyre cords, Kevlar-type materials have also become widely used in composites. Uses include filament-wound rocket motors and pressure vessels, metal-lined Kevlar-overwrapped vessels in the space shuttle, boat and kayak hulls, Kevlar-epoxy helmets for the US military, and as one of the reinforcements in composite lorry cabs. [Pg.515]

Epoxide resin laminates are of particular importance in the aircraft industry. It has been stated that the Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft use 1800 kg of carbon fibre/ epoxide resin composites for structural purposes per aeroplane. The resin has also been used with Aramid fibres for filament-wound rocket motors and pressure vessels. The AV-18 fighter aircraft is also said to be 18% epoxide resin/cc bon fibre composite.
