Pressure sensitive mats

Mechanical risks may be engineered out of the process, or effectively enclosed by means of fixed guarding. Alternative forms of guarding involve the use of interlocked guards, light-sensitive barriers or pressure-sensitive mats. Trip devices and other forms of emergency stops may also be incorporated. 

Trip Devices. A trip device ensures that an approach beyond a safe limit (or, in some cases, the initiation of an entanglement) stops or reverses the machine movement, within a maximum prescribed time, usually 0.2 seconds. Trip devices include mechanical screens or barriers, which activate a switch upon trip, photo-electric (p-e) curtains, or pressure-sensitive mats. Trip devices differ from emergency stops in that they are activated by the involuntary action of the person at risk. The main problems associated with the use of trip devices are maladjustment of the device, or the machine s brake, or failure of these elements. The unproven reliability of some types of trip devices limit their use as secondary forms of guarding, or where limited access is required, e.g. for loading and unloading. 

Readers often inquire about relatively easy manufacture of an inexpensive, thin, pressure-sensitive switch that can be slipped under a door or floor mat, in a chair, or into the trunk of a car, which will detonate when heavy luggage is piled on top. Figure 13 shows such a device. 

The use of polyurethanes in the pressure-sensitive adhesives market has been relatively small. Polyurethanes have been somewhat limited to being used as additives to pressure-sensitive adhesives to improve their cohesive strength. Recent developments in the institutional carpet backing or automotive carpet floor mat markets suggest that pressure-sensitive urethanes can succeed commercially [89]. 

Adhesive applications can be widespread including contact cmnents, pressure-sensitive adhesives and hot melts. In solid compounded articles footwear is a large volune application such as molded-ln-place soling or unit soles to be cemented to uppers. Additional uses are in toys, milk tubing, cove base, mats and miscellaneous coatings or molded parts. Potential uses include blends with ethylene-propylene rubber and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers to provide ozone-resistant fomulations or blends to improve crack- or impact-resistance of plastics. 

Film adhesives may be used only on flat surfaces or simple curves. Application requires a relatively high degree of cure to ensure non-wrinkfing and removal of separator sheets. Characteristics of available film adhesives vary widely, depending on the type of adhesives used. Film adhesives are supplied in both unsupported and supported types. The carrier for supported films is generally fibrous fabric or mat. Film adhesives are supplied in heat-activated, pressure-sensitive, or solvent-activated forms. 

A trip device ensures that an approach to a dangerous part beyond a safe limit stops or reverses the machine (Figure 26.18). These devices should be arranged so that they are actuated involuntarily by the movement of the limb into the danger area. Trip devices include trip bars and wires, sensitive probes (for radial drills), photoelectric devices and pressure-sensitive strips and mats. Some safeguarding devices are used to detect the presence of people and to trip the machines they safeguard. The main two to be described here are photoelectric safety systems and laser scanners, which are both types of active optoelectronic electrosensitive protective systems. Pressure sensitive devices such as pressure mats and trip bars are other types of trip device.

A Finnigan MAT TSQ mass spectrometer was used to record the mass spectra of brinzolamide. The conditions were 0.3 mA current, 1100-volt acceleration voltage and 10 preamp sensitivity. The ionization voltage was 70 eV for El (electron impact) ionization mode. For Cl (chemical ionization) mode, a positive ionization voltage of 100 eV and a pressure of 0.3 torr of methane were used. The El and Cl spectra are shown in Figures 12 and 13, respectively. Peak assignments for the El and Cl spectra are listed in Table 6. Both the Cl and El spectra have an MH peak at m/z = 384.
