A quantity of earlier work exists on chromic acid oxidation of hydrocarbons. In this section it has generally been assumed that in addition to deposition processes, there are removal mechanisms occurring at the same time. Such a situation may not apply to all fouling processes. In some examples the mass transfer of fouling precursors towards the surface may be the only transport mechanism removal processes may be non-existent. The general shape of the curve of fouling thickness with time (Fig. 1.1) may arise, not because of the interaction of the two mass transfer processes, but because the deposition process is suppressed, i.e. an auto retardation of the deposition process till it becomes virtually zero. Benzaldehyde is easily oxidised by atmospheric oxygon giving, ultimately, benzoic acid. This auto-oxidation is considerably influenced by catalysts tiiose are considered to react with the unstable peroxide complexes which are the initial products of the oxidation. Nonreactive additive flame retardants dominate the flexible urethane foam field. However, auto seating appHcations exist, particularly in Europe, for a reactive polyol for flexible foams, Hoechst-Celanese ExoHt 413, a polyol mixture containing 13% P and 19.5% Cl. The patent beHeved to describe it (114) shows a reaction of ethylene oxide and a prereacted product of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and polyphosphoric acid. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) are inert, stable chemicals used primarily as additive flame retardants to suppress or delay combustion. In their use as flame retardants, PBBs were added to polymer materials, but were not chemically incorporated into the polymer matrix and therefore could migrate out of the polymer matrix with time. Hexabromobiphenyl was used as a Are retardant mainly in thermoplastics in electronic equipment housings. Smaller amounts were used as a Are retardant in coating and lacquers, and in polyurethane foam for auto upholstery. After the voluntary ban of hexabromobiphenyl in the late 1970s, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other flame retardants were used as replacements. [Pg.2087]

Polluted urban air can and has aggravated chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive ventilatory disease, pulmonary emphysema, and bronchial asthma [11].
