Precursors contacting method

The galvanic or contact method was the precursor to electrochemical treatment [283]. In an electrolytically conducting solution, the artifact is brought into contact with a piece of a less noble metal— usually zinc or aluminium. While the metal corrodes, the electrons supplied to the object allow the reduction of the tarnish layer. Although simple, this method presents some drawbacks, like the progressive contamination of the solution by the corrosion products of the active metal and also limitations with respect to the choice of applicable solution. [Pg.135]

The field of surface-mediated synthesis of metal carbonyl clusters has developed briskly in recent years [4-6], although many organometallic chemists still seem to be unfamiliar with the methods or consider themselves ill-equipped to carry them out. The distillation method (see Alternate Protocol 1) involves recovering malonaldehyde from an acidified food product. It is similar to that of the direct heating approach (see below), except that TBA is reacted only with an aliquot of the distillate. Consequently, physical and chemical interference by extraneous food constituents in the reaction with TBA is minimized because the food is never directly in contact with TBA. Silicon carbides are generally synthesized by the pyrolysis of precursors, prepared by liquid phase methods. One possible way for precursor synthesis is the addition of carbon black or sucrose, to a gelling silica.8 In this method, the carbon is introduced from an external source. Most relevant for the oxygen transport should be the defective crystal structure of both catalyst components.
