Gas phase reactants

Pertiaps the most obvious experiment is to compare the rate of a reaction in the presence of a solvent and in the absence of the solvent (i.e., in the gas phase). This has long been possible for reactions proceeding homolytically, in which little charge separation occurs in the transition state for such reactions the rates in the gas phase and in the solution phase are similar. Very recently it has become possible to examine polar reactions in the gas phase, and the outcome is greatly different, with the gas-phase reactivity being as much as 10 greater than the reactivity in polar solvents. This reduced reactivity in solvents is ascribed to inhibition by solvation in such reactions the role of the solvent clearly overwhelms the intrinsic reactivity of the reactants. Gas-phase kinetic studies are a powerful means for interpreting the reaction coordinate at a molecular level. [Pg.385]

Fuel cell electrodes are more complex structures than battery electrodes. They serve three functions (1) to ensure a stable interface between the reactant gas and the electrolyte, (2) to catalyze the electrode reactions, and (3) to conduct the electrons from or to the reaction sites. A significant problem is the control of the interface at the juncture of the reactant (gas) phase, the electrolyte medium, and the catalyzed conducting electrode, the so-called three-phase boundary , where the electrolyte, electrode, and gas all come together. A stable three-phase boundary is critical to good performance and long operation. Therefore, the porosity and the wetting behavior with electrolyte and the electrode surface must be precisely adjusted. [Pg.24]

A very important particular case of gas-solid reactions is that in which a component of the solid phase reacts with the reactant gas phase very rapidly and the particle size remains constant. This establishes a reaction interface between the two zones in one zone there is diffusion (but no reaction) to the interface, and in the other there is only reaction at the interface. The course of a surface reaction can in principle be followed directly with the use of various surface spectroscopic techniques plus equipment allowing the rapid transfer of the surface from reaction to high-vacuum conditions see Campbell [232]. More often, however, the experimental observables are the changes with time of the concentrations of reactants and products in the gas phase. The rate law in terms of surface concentrations might be called the true rate law and the one analogous to that for a homogeneous system. What is observed, however, is an apparent rate law giving the dependence of the rate on the various gas pressures. The desire to understand catalytic chemistry was one of the motivating forces underlying the development of surface science. In a catalytic reaction, the reactants first adsorb onto the surface and then react with each other to fonn volatile product(s). The substrate itself is not affected by the reaction, but the reaction would not occur without its presence. Types of catalytic reactions include exchange, recombination, unimolecular decomposition, and bimolecular reactions. A reaction would be considered to be of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type if both reactants first adsorbed onto the surface, and then reacted to fonn the products. If one reactant first adsorbs, and the other then reacts with it directly from the gas phase, the reaction is of the Eley-Ridel type. The reason for this enliancement is intuitively obvious once the two reactants have met, they temporarily are trapped in a connnon solvent shell and fomi a short-lived so-called encounter complex. During the lifetime of the encounter complex they can undergo multiple collisions, which give them a much bigger chance to react before they separate again, than in the gas phase. So this effect is due to the microscopic solvent structure in the vicinity of the reactant pair. Its description in the framework of equilibrium statistical mechanics requires the specification of an appropriate interaction potential. [Pg.835]

As with the other surface reactions discussed above, the steps m a catalytic reaction (neglecting diffiision) are as follows the adsorption of reactant molecules or atoms to fomi bound surface species, the reaction of these surface species with gas phase species or other surface species and subsequent product desorption. The global reaction rate is governed by the slowest of these elementary steps, called the rate-detemiming or rate-limiting step. In many cases, it has been found that either the adsorption or desorption steps are rate detemiining. M ass Transfer. Mass transfer in a fluidized bed can occur in several ways. Bed-to-surface mass transfer is important in plating appHcations. Transfer from the soHd surface to the gas phase is important in drying, sublimation, and desorption processes. Mass transfer can be the limiting step in a chemical reaction system. In most instances, gas from bubbles, gas voids, or the conveying gas reacts with a soHd reactant or catalyst. In catalytic systems, the surface area of a catalyst can be enormous. Both vapor-phase and Hquid-phase processes are employed to nitrate paraffins, using either HNO or NO2. The nitrations occur by means of free-radical steps, and sufftciendy high temperatures are required to produce free radicals to initiate the reaction steps. For Hquid-phase nitrations, temperatures of about 150—200°C are usually required, whereas gas-phase nitrations fall in the 200—440°C range. Sufficient pressures are needed for the Hquid-phase processes to maintain the reactants and products as Hquids. Residence times of several minutes are commonly required to obtain acceptable conversions. Gas-phase nitrations occur at atmospheric pressure, but pressures of 0.8—1.2 MPa (8—12 atm) are frequentiy employed in industrial units. The higher pressures expedite the condensation and recovery of the nitroparaffin products when cooling water is employed to cool the product gas stream leaving the reactor (see Nitroparaffins). [Pg.35]

Control of addition vs substitution by free radicals can be effected by the reaction conditions, ie, radical concentration, temperature, and phase. Using halogens as propylene reactants, high temperatures and the gas phase favor high radical concentrations and substitution reactions cold, Hquid-phase conditions favor addition reactions. [Pg.125]

A high purity titanium dioxide of poorly defined crystal form (ca 80% anatase, 20% mtile) is made commercially by flame hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride. This product is used extensively for academic photocatalytic studies (70). The gas-phase oxidation of titanium tetrachloride, the basis of the chloride process for the production of titanium dioxide pigments, can be used for the production of high purity titanium dioxide, but, as with flame hydrolysis, the product is of poorly defined crystalline form unless special dopants are added to the principal reactants (71). [Pg.121]

Separability. One of the greatest advantages of a solid catalyst is that it can be separated easily from the products of reaction. To do this successfully requires careful control of the process conditions so that exposure of the catalyst to nonreactant liquids capable of affecting or dissolving either the catalytic material or the support is prevented or rninimi2ed. Solid catalysts typically are used in axial or radial flow beds and multitubular reactors. Many successful commercial processes maintain the reactants and products in the gas phase while in contact with the catalyst to avoid catalyst degradation problems. [Pg.193]
