Practice-based engineering degrees

Astrid M.W. Bulte is a researcher in science edncation, being since 1999 connected to the Freudenthal Institnte for Science and Mathematics Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. In her current position she focuses her research on the development and evaluation of authentic practice-based science units for secondary education. She contributes to the education of student - science teachers, teaching students how to communicate science issues. She takes a leading position in national curriculum developments. After she obtained her Master degree in Chemical Engineering Science in 1989, she completed her doctoral thesis in 1994 in the same subject at the same university. From 1994 till 1999, she was a teacher of physics and chemistry in secondary education. 

Proposal 3 Working closely with industry and professional societies, higher education should establish graduate professional schools of engineering that would offer practice-based degrees at the post-baccalaureate level as the entry degree into the engineering profession... 

The suspension process is practiced by only a few companies because it offers a higher degree of production control and product engineering during polymerization step. This process suspends the water-based reactant in a hydrocarbon-based solvent. The net result is that the suspension polymerization creates the primary polymer particle in the reactor rather than mechanically in postreactions stages. Performance enhancements can also be during or just after the reaction stage. 

Tribotechnical properties of 30 polymer-based materials widely used in engineering have been specified according to the USSR Testing Method MR—74—82. The high degree of reproducibility allows a successful application of the data obtained in designing practice.
