Total power failure

In December of 2002, a three-hour total power failure undermined the containment systems at an infectious disease laboratory at Plum Island, New York. Workers had to resort to sealing the doors with duct tape, as the air compressors failed. [Pg.114]

Both scrubbers will be supplied with three sources of electrical power - the main grid supply, a back-up grid supply from a different substation and an emergency diesel generator. In the emergency chlorine scrubber, critical equipment items will be backed-up by automatic start-up of stand-by equipment. A gravity head tank of caustic soda and a nitrogen ejector will also be provided to allow safe neutralisation of chlorine vents in the event of total power failure. [Pg.152]

Uncontrollable backstreaming can occur if there is a total system power failure that controls your vacuum system. If power in your building should go out and all mechanical pumping ceases, the efficiency of the traps and baffles to maintain a barrier in a static system will be tested. If someone is around at the time, close all stopcocks between each pump from any other and the stopcocks between the pumping system and the vacuum system. [Pg.442]

ABC Pharmaceutical s total peak power consumption is about 4000 kWh, and is obtained from Water and Electricity Supply Corporation, New York. ABC Pharmaceutical also has three (2) standby generators totalling 4500 KVA, which are to be used during main power failure. [Pg.69]

Before you can start with the first measurement, you must carry out a few general tasks. The equipment should be placed in such a way that it will be easily accessible from both sides, the front and the back. The electrical connections between the single modules should be marked at each end, so that a later rearrangement can be done easily. Do not change those connections for the moment You should keep an eye on all the electrical connections in case they become loose, thereby causing a bad contact or a total power failure. [Pg.6]

Escape routes, staircases, and railings shall also be provided at appropriate places. Alternate lights in plant shall be given supply from alternate power feeders. This wiU prevent total darkness in the plant in case of power failure of one feeder. There shall be easy approach to diesel/gas generator sets for the supply of power in case of need (for emergency power supply) when grid power fails. However, these sets shall start automatically whenever grid power supply fails. [Pg.97]

Total power failure and total information drop out, both due to accidental events and malicious acts. One of the interviewees had experienced a total power failure in a control room during a drill, which lead to lack of information technology systems in the control room. The failure rmcovered that there was no emergency generator at place, which was explained by a lacking check routine. The power was only away for a couple of seconds. [Pg.2064]

Various transients analysed are one primary or secondary or boiler feed water pump trip, one primary or secondary pump seizure, rupture of one primary pump discharge pipe, offsite power failure, uncontrolled withdrawal of a control and safety rod, total loss of feed water to SG, one primary or secondary pump acceleration from 20 % power and feed water flow increase to 125 % in one loop. Based on these studies reactor scram and LOR parameters are identified. Reactor is scrammed, i.e., by gravity drop of all control safety rods (CSR) and diverse safety rods (DSR), only for events involving fast transients and flow blockage in the core. For all the other events LOR (lowering of all the control and safety rods) is used for the reactor shutdown. The safety criteria is to ensure the availability of two diverse reactor trip parameters for every DBE (fig 9). [Pg.92]

The provision that the documentation does not have to be retained in a separate file..reduces the amount of effort needed to meet this requirement. However, it also means that a comprehensive indexing system will be required. It is a good idea to keep critical documents that may be urgently needed (generally to do with emergency response) on p er as well as electronically. Then, if there is a total power failure, that information stiU remains accessible. [Pg.203]

The circuitry ia so arranged that a total d.c. power failure (two independent aourcea) will have no effect on the ventilation closure poaltiona. Detaila on bypaaalng featured have not been firmly eatabllahed at thla time. [Pg.353]

The fog spray system in the 105-N Building will turn on. Further, the fog spray will stay on after the pressure switches reset unless the fog spray circuit itself is reset. Total d.c. power failure will cause actuation of the fog spray system. [Pg.353]

The confinement valves on supply and exhaust ducts will close. Total power failure will cause closure. However, two separate power supplies are used and If... [Pg.353]

The impact of total power failure is very complex and needs to be established carefully. Total power failure does not always result in maximum relief contingency. [Pg.275]

In some cases, the operation of a plant depends on the pumping of feed. In such a system, total power failure will result in loss of feed and, in turn, may stop any substantial relief from the plant. However, if the feed pump is partly turbine driven, feed will be available at a reduced rate, and the relief can be significantly higher. [Pg.275]

Regarding total power failure, additional study is required to analyze and evaluate the combined effects of multiple equipment failures. Special consideration should be given to the effect of simultaneous opening of relief valves in several services, particularly if the relief valves discharge into a closed header system. [Pg.275]

Power factor losses under certain conditions cause a temperature rise in the insulation that may result in failure or reduced life of the insulation. In communication wiring the power factor of the insulation plays an important role. Here the actual power loss can represent an appreciable portion of the total energy in the circuit. In addition, this loss disturbs the circuit characteristics of the equipment at both ends of the line. [Pg.326]

The old maxim if it ain t broke don t fix it is very applicable in today s machinery. A study conducted at a major nuclear power facility found that 35% of the failures occurred after a major turnaround. This is why total condition monitoring is necessary in any performance based total productive maintenance system and leads to overhauls being planned on proper data evaluation of the machinery rather than on a fixed interval. [Pg.741]

Figure 1.4.3-1 from WASH-1400 compares the risk of 100 nuclear plants with other man-caused risks. This is a CCDF that gives the frequency per year that accidents will L-xcccd a value on the abscissa. For example, for 100 fatalities, the frequency that 100 nuclear power plants could do this is lE-4, air crashes to persons on the ground lE-2, chlorine releases 1. IE-2, dam failures 7E-2, explosions SF-2, fires 1. IE-1, air crashes (total) 5E-1, and total man-caused 9E-1,... [Pg.10]

On the other hand, if one considers all of Mandeleev s many predictions of new elements, his powers of prophecy appear somewhiit less impressive, even to the point of being a little worrying. In all Mendeleev predicted a total of 16 elements, of which only nine were subsequently Isolated. As one historian of chemistry has wondered, how b it that weareprcpaied to forgive Mendeleev so many failures ... [Pg.126]
