The modem factory ferming methods, with poultry, swine, and other farm animals kept in confinement and in crowded conditions, has been condemned by animal rights activists. They claim that because the animals are often not able to perform their natural and instinctive behaviors, they are suffering. Animal science departments have been aware of these criticisms and have developed a new field of farm animal welfare. Faculty positions in the emerging field have been filled, and students are being introduced to tbe concepts. Animal welfare is being studied academically in a manner tbat is validated and measured objectively and, tberefore, is reliable. The discipline considers the relationship of ferm animal welfare to the animals environment in three areas how the animals feel, their fitness and health, and their namral behaviors. [Pg.65]

Course work in poultry science is basic for students interested in pursuing a career in egg production. Because most poultry science departments have been absorbed into animal science departments at land-grant universities, the student should carefully search the curriculum, staff, and programs in these departments to determine if they can provide an adequate focus on egg production and technology. [Pg.567]

Nutrient requirements in North America are based on the recommendations of the National Research Council - National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC. The recommendations cover pigs, poultry, dairy cattle, horses, laboratory animals, etc. and are published as a series of books. The recommendations for each species are updated about every 10 years, the current Nutrient Requirements of Poultry being the 1994, 9th revised edition. A specially appointed committee of experts meets to review published research findings and to derive estimates of requirement. These are then published as recommendations. The information is used widely by the feed industry in North America and in many other regions. [Pg.50]
