Post-Unit Assessment

This is the second part of the matched pre- and post-unit assessments of students ideas about chemicals. By comparing the individual and class responses from Lesson 1 with those from the following three activities, you will be able to document students learning over the course of the unit. Explain that the purpose of this assessment is to give students a chance to review the materials in their notebooks in order to help them recognize what they have learned. 

If you wish, divide the students in groups of four and have them use a jigsaw approach to share thoughts. Ask each group to review a particular activity or series of activities, share what they have learned among themselves, and then share with the whole class. Finally, ask the class to add any comments.

At this time, students also produce class lists of what they now think about chemicals and what they would like to learn (see Figure 1-1) as well as Individual notebook entries that reveal some of their current thinking on chemicals. Post-transfer the key risks are routinely re-assessed. By performing appropriate statistically based analysis, the receiving unit can continue to monitor the data trends versus historical data and re-affirm that the method continues to provide satisfactory and reproducible performance. 

Studies are currently underway in Spain and Israel to assess MDMA s effectiveness in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). On November 2, 2001, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first clinical trial of MDMA as a treatment for PTSD in the United States. The study is currently awaiting approval from the research review board at the Medical University of South Carolina. 

Compared with the occupational exposnre of applicators and workers following pesticide application in the field, post-application residential exposure to pesticides used in and around the home is lower in level, but encompasses a wider variety of scenarios, such as age distribution, activity patterns and product use. Typically, few data are available on residential exposure, while a large body of data does exist for occupational exposures. Residential exposure assessment and modeling may benefit from the new data requirements under the United States Food Qnality Protection Act of 1996 (Lewis et al, 1994 Hill et al., 1995 Lu and Fenske, 1998 USEPA, 1990 Whitmore et al., 1994). In occupational exposnre assessment, a database approach is favored, while in residential exposure assessment a mechanistic and statistical modeling approach is dominant.
