Positivity rule

When ( = 0 and Ax = Ay, the time step hmit can be found using the positivity rule. 

It is interesting that chlorination of 14 illustrates all three rules. Of the four positions open to the electrophile, the 5 position violates rule 1, the 2 position rule 2, and the 4 position rule 3. The principal attack is therefore at position 6. 

Among the many sensory reactions Phycomyces displays, the study of the photoreceptor and adaptation deserves maximal attention, since Phycomyces shares these two attributes with a variety of other blue light sensitive organisms. Action-spectroscopy indicates a flavin as the photoreceptor of Phycomyces. /3-carotene was positively ruled out as a possible receptor, since mutants with no trace amounts of )3-carotene are phototropical normal. The photoreceptor has not yet been isolated. As in other systems the difficulty consists in distinguishing the flavin photoreceptor from the bulk flavoproteins in the cell. One therefore needs unambiguous criteria for the identification of the photoreceptor. The most promising approach for an isolation would be a photoreceptor mutant and we described the properties those mutants should have. Until now there is no firm evidence that the photomutants, madA or madB are defective in the photoreceptor. 

I think counsel can see that we might find ourselves in a most embarrassing position ruling on the sufficiency of the prosecution s evidence before we know what it is. Further, the Tribunal would not...

Positive rules go a step beyond negative golden rules, requiring right conduct, even exemplary, conduct toward all. Consider, for example, the Christian golden rule, a positive golden rule ... 

In the ascending bubble problem (Example 8), the requirement that the pressure at the surface should be positive rules out the dramatic behavior near the singular curve ( = but, by suitably defining the value of the derivative at the discontinuity, solution paths of perilous stability can be found4 (Cf. [312]). In Fig. 13, the broken line A = 0 is manifestly unstable. However, the broken line B = 0 can be reached in a finite time by a solution starting above A = 0 in the lower part of the phase plane and below A - 0 in the upper part. If the value at the singularity, B = 0, which is otherwise undefined, is correctly chosen, the solution turns and follows the path B = 0. In practice, it falls victim to the peril, even when stable. 

E21.10 The entropy of activation is positive, ruling out an associative mechanism (associative mechanisms have uniformly negative entropies of activation). A possible mechanism is loss of one dimethyl sulfide ligand, followed by the coordination of 1,10-phenanthroline, giving an unstable, intermediate complex that can be either five-coordinate (both phen donor atoms coordinated) or four-coordinate (only one phen donor atom coordinated). In the final step, the second dimethyl sulfide ligand leaves and rearranges to form a square-planar complex. 

The program used the given facts and matched them to the given rules and created a new fact. Basically any programmable action can take place as a result of a positive rule match. For instance, another set of rules could be evaluated facts could be added, deleted, or changed or even an external program could be called to trigger any other external action, like a data analysis. 

If the half-life is 1.8 hours, the plasma concentration should approach steady state after 8 hours (more than four half-lives). As indicated by the equation used in question 9, the steady-state concentration is a function of dosage and clearance, not volume of distribution. If the plasma level is less than predicted, the clearance in this patient must be greater than average. (In questions of this type, do not assume errors of analysis or administration as answers, unless all other possible answers can be positively ruled out.) The answer is (B). 

C. Clinical Use The major application of the thrombolytic agents is in the emergency treatment of coronary artery thrombosis. Under ideal conditions (ie, treatment within 1—4 hours), these agents may cause prompt recanalization of the occluded vessel. Very prompt use (ie, within 3 hours of the first symptoms) of t-PA in patients with ischemic stroke appears to result in a significantly better clinical outcome. Cerebral hemorrhage must be positively ruled out before such use. The thrombolytic agents are also used in cases of multiple pulmonary emboli. 

The so-called Michael condensation involves the additive condensation of aj8-unsaturated acids, their esters, or aj3-unsaturated ketones with the sodium derivative of ethyl malonate, acetoacetate, or cyanoacetate. To explain this and other addition reactions Michael published many papers setting out a negative-positive rule and a distribution principle . The first assumed, for example, that in propylene, CHa CHrCHg, the positive radical CH3 makes the adjacent carbon in CH more positive than that in CHg, so that hydrogen iodide H+I adds mainly to form CHg-CHI-CHg, but I+C1 adds to form mostly CHa CHChCHgl. With BrCl, in which both atoms are nearly equally positive, about equal amounts of CHs-CHCl-CHaBr and CHg-CHBr-CHgCl are formed. In longer chains there are spatial influences.

Positive rules were those rules in the Bible directly commanded by God or by Jesus. See Romans 14, a letter in which the apostle Paul enjoins toleration of differences in ohservance among Christians, and argues that no-one should undertake an observance (e.g. either eating meat or not, or worshipping on one particular day of the week and not another) if they do not believe that observance to be commanded. It concludes (v. 23) And he that eateth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith for whatsoever is not of faith is sin . 

With ALADDIN, we identified a number of molecules that had previously unknown dopaminergic activity. We also showed that the traditional super- position rule for catechol amines as dopaminergics is not the only one that can correctly categorize the known data. Thus, the new tool was able to challenge traditional thinking. 

In 8.7, addition takes place to the even, open butadiene, rather than to the even, closed arene (rule 2), and does so at the terminal position (rule 3). In 8.8, we apply rule 1 before rule 2 so that the even, closed arene is attacked in preference to the odd, open allyl. Cp is usually very resistant to attack, but 8.9 shows a rare example of attack at a Cp ring, in a case where the 2+ ionic charge is strongly activating. As an odd, closed polyenyl, this only happens to Cp if there are no other iv-bonded ligands.
