Portability defined

Handbook 44 defines five accuracy classes for scales in terms of the value of the scale division and the number of divisions. Class I appHes to precision laboratory weighing. Class II appHes to laboratory weighing (precious metals, gems, and grain test scales). Class III appHes to the majority of industrial and retail scales, and to all scales not specified in the other categories. Class III L appHes to vehicle, Hvestock, railway, crane, and hopper scales. Class nil appHes to portable scales used for highway weight enforcement.

For less well defined incidents however, these detection systems may be inadequate. Portable systems must operate on a portable power source. Often this simply means batteries. When heating becomes a part of the operating sequence, batteries can be consumed quickly. A well-defined energy budget is necessary early in the design process.

Several portable inhalation devices have been developed and are being tested to determine whether they improve protein and peptide delivery via the airways. Aerosolized DNase has been shown in patients with cystic flbrosis to significantly reduce the buildup of mucus in the lung and the incidence of infections. Devices for delivery of therapeutic proteins to deep-lung alveoli to achieve systemic effects are also in development. These products are formulated so that the device aerosolizes the protein in a defined particle size range that cannot be easily achieved by means of conventional metered dose inhalers. 

Most MPP vendors will provide HPF (or at least the subset) including extrinsic procedures on most message-passing machines. However, HPF is still not widely available, and portability will remain an issue because many facets such as I/O are not defined. Applied Parallel Research has a product called xHPF that provides a partial HPF subset with portability between true MPP machines and workstation clusters (using PVM,, Express, or Linda ). The performance and robustness of this package are not known to us. 

Full MPI is big, with about 50 defined constants and about 120 routines in the FORTRAN interface. To encourage rapid implementation, a subset has been defined that includes most of the point-to-point routines, simple global operations, and restrictions on the nature of communicators. Several vendors promise to have early implementations, and a portable version is already available from Argonne National Laboratory. The portable version will be built upon P4 or PVM on workstation clusters.
