Friction primers

MECHANICAL initiators PERCUSSION PRIMERS, STAB DETONATORS, AND FRICTION PRIMERS... [Pg.850]

Although it is evident that initiators represent a broad spectrum of items and designs, both percussion and electric, the contents of this treatise will deal only with three selected types of percussion items ie, percussion primers, stab primers and/or detonators, and friction primers... [Pg.850]

Although a significant quantity of this information has been obtained, initiating devices operating on this principle and known as friction primers appear to be anachronous... [Pg.863]

What has been described so far constitutes only one half of the friction primer, ie, the main charge, contained in a cylindrical cup. Centrally located in the K chlorate mixt was a loop of braided wire, coated with red P (90%) and dried shellac (10%). Any mixt of red P with K. chlorate was, and still is, very sensitive, hazardous, and unpredictable. There is ample reason to understand why friction primers were abandoned and replaced with spring-actuated firing pins to fire percussion primers and carry the sequence thru a suitable expl train... [Pg.863]

Attempts to find any present application have not been fruitful. It is possible that, in the vast array of ordnance, some type of friction primer device may still be in use... [Pg.863]

A friction primer compn for an airplane flare contains 14 parts K chlorate 1.6 parts charcoal in 0.3 parts of binder (dextrin). Modified scratch sensitive mixts contg thermite produce very high temps and can ignite some smoke mixts without an intermediate starter (Ref 54, p 5-46)... [Pg.758]

Davis (1943), 400-53 (Primary expls, detonators and primers) 453-54 (Friction primers) 454-58 (Percussion primers) 9a) D. Hart, "Compilation of Data on the Composition of Foreign Igniters and Tracers",... [Pg.1024]

Friction Compositions for Friction Detonators Friction Firing Devices and Friction Igniters or Primers. These are powders which are easily ignited by friction. Some of the simplest mixtures are K chlorate with sugar or with antimony sulfide. Davis (Ref 1, p 453) gives table listing three compns which have been widely used in friction primers for artillety, separate-loaded ammunition... [Pg.584]

Compositions used in friction primers are listed under Friction Compositions (Compare with Friction Detonators and Friction Firing Devices)... [Pg.585]

Dextrin also has been and is now used as a binder in various pyrotechnic compos (Ref 11) Davis (Ref 5, pp 62ff) gives numerous examples. As a binder a desensitizer it has been used in primer compns, as for example in a friction primer used for an airplane flare (Ref 5, p 454), or in a compn. for electric primers consisting of K chlorate 88, charcoal 10 dextrin 2% (Ref 9, p 118). As a fuel dextrin was used in some commercial expls, such as Nobelit "Fordit (Ref 2, p 407). In some gelatine expls, such as "Safety Jelly Dynamite (Ref, p 407), a paste called "glue-dextrine-glycerine jelly was used... [Pg.8]

The following proced was used at PicArsn and described in ChemLabRept 94772(1943) for detection of azides in loaded housings of friction primers ... [Pg.575]

Explosive). See Cyclotetramethylenetetranitraroine Lead Azide(LA). Used in friction primers(mixts of LA/Sb2S3/KC103/Abrasive) and in detonators (in conjunction with LSt) (Ref l,p 68)... [Pg.301]

The following tabic shows three compositions which have been widely used in friction primers for artillery. All the materials... [Pg.453]

In a typical friction primer for an airplane flare, ignition is secured by pulling a loop of braided wire coated with red phosphorus and shellac through a pellet, made from potassium chlorate (14 parts) and charcoal (1.6 parts), hardened with dextrin (0.3 part). [Pg.454]

Striker Composition. See under Friction Primers in Vol 8, P386-L R... [Pg.448]
