Pork tapeworm

Both the adult and the larval cysticerci (bladderworm) of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) are able to Hve in humans the parasite is found sporadically in uncooked pork. In the stomach, the larva is digested out of the pork flesh it then grows and attaches to the wall of the small intestine. Maturity is reached in 5—12 weeks. The adult is 5 m long, and untreated adult worms may survive for 25 years. [Pg.244]

Praziquantel is the agent of choice against all trema-todes apart from Fasciola hepatica where bithionol is the drug of first choice. It is also an anticestodal agent and, as also niclosamide, is a first choice drug for intestinal tapeworm infestations by Taenia solum (pork tapeworm), Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia latum (fish tapeworm) and Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm) and it is a second choice drug af-... [Pg.429]

Cysticercosis is caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm Tenia solium. Neurocysticercosis is the most severe and common clinical manifestation in humans and probably the most frequent parasitic infection of the central nervous system. T. solium is endemic in Latin America, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. However, with the advent of computerized neuroradiology and improved serological tests, neurocysticercosis is increasingly being diagnosed throughout the world. [Pg.425]

Clinical use Albendazole has a wide anthelmintic spectrum. It is an alternative drug for larva migrans, for ascariasis, and for infections caused by roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, pinworms, and threadworms. Albendazole is also active against the pork tapeworm in the larval stage. [Pg.469]

The four medically important cestodes are Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia solium (pork tapeworm, which can cause cysticerci in the brain and the eyesj, Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm), and Echinococcus granulosus (dog tapeworm, which can cause hydatid cysts in the liver, lungs, and brain). The primary drugs for treatment of cestode infections are praziquantel (see above) and niclosamide. [Pg.472]

Praziquantel is the drug of first choice for infections caused by the Oriental liver fluke and by the fish tapeworm. Both types of infection are transmitted mainly via the consumption of raw fish. Niclosamide is one of two dmgs of choice for fish tapeworm infections (with praziquantel), but it is not active against Clonorchis sinensis. Albendazole is not effective in fish tapeworm infections but is useful in the pork tapeworm larval stage (cysticercosis). The answer is (E). [Pg.475]

Pork tapeworm Taenia soiium). Pork tapeworms sometimes are called bladder worms and occasionally are found in uncooked pork. The worm attaches itself to the intestinal wall of the human host. The adult worm reaches 5 m in length and, if untreated, survives in the host for many years. [Pg.1694]
