Beef tapeworm

Beef tapeworm (Taenia saginatd) is found worldwide in people who eat rare beef and is most common in developing countries. Worms are often 5—10 m long with about 1000 proglottides. Usually a patient carries only one worm. Infected persons are frequently asymptomatic, but intestinal disturbances can occur. Detached sections of worm 0.5 cm x 2 cm may creep out of the end of the digestive tract. [Pg.244]

Praziquantel is the agent of choice against all trema-todes apart from Fasciola hepatica where bithionol is the drug of first choice. It is also an anticestodal agent and, as also niclosamide, is a first choice drug for intestinal tapeworm infestations by Taenia solum (pork tapeworm), Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia latum (fish tapeworm) and Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm) and it is a second choice drug af-... [Pg.429]

Although relatively high doses (4 6 kGy) are required to kill food-borne parasites, much lower doses are adequate to prevent their reproduction and maturation resulting in loss of infectivity. Table 6 summarizes the effect of ionizing radiation on the most important parasites that may be associated with fishery products and meats [38]. Thus the parasitic roundworm Trichinella spiralis, which causes trichinosis, the pork and beef tapeworms, the protozoon in pork responsible for toxoplasmois, and various flukes that infest fish, can be rendered noninfective by low-dose radiation treatment. Humans are the definitive hosts for T. saginata, the beef tapeworm. This most common tapeworm usually is detected after passage of proglottids from the intestine. It is cosmopolitan, occurring most commonly in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, where undercooked beef is consumed. Praziquantel is the drug of choice for T. saginata infection. [Pg.697]

The four medically important cestodes are Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia solium (pork tapeworm, which can cause cysticerci in the brain and the eyesj, Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm), and Echinococcus granulosus (dog tapeworm, which can cause hydatid cysts in the liver, lungs, and brain). The primary drugs for treatment of cestode infections are praziquantel (see above) and niclosamide. [Pg.472]

Beef tapeworm Taenia saginata). This worm is found worldwide and infects people who eat undercooked beef. The worm reaches a length of more than 5 m, and it contains approximately 100 segments/m. Each of these segments contains its own reproductive organs. [Pg.1694]
