Academy Award

Like most events in New York now, the party boasted its own specialty cocktail. It was a Cosmic Cocktail, which is a cosmopolitan with pomegranate juice. Pomegranate was die it fruit juice of 2003, mostly due to the promotional efforts of a California pomegranate producer who introduced POM Wonderful, a bottled juice, nationally in 2003. A pomegranate martini developed by Dale DeGroff, die ex—Rainbow Room bartender and the King of Cocktails, was the official cocktail of the 2004 Academy Awards Governor s Ball. 

Charlton Heston, Academy Award-winning movie actor, best known for his star roles in Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. Elected president of the National Rifle Association in 1998. In electing him president, the NRA probably wanted to harness Heston s appeal as a moral icon and patriarch, particularly to older and more conservative Americans. Heston roused the crowd at annual NRA meetings by holding up a rifle and shouting from my cold, dead hands By most accounts he was an effective spokesperson and fund-raiser for the organization. In 2002 the 78-year-old Heston was diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease and announced he would retire from his position with the NRA when his one-year term ended. 

Mendeleev and his students contributed to all branches of chemistry, and his literary work was also of great value. His textbook Principles of Chemistry was the best chemistry text in the Russian language, and for this reason the Petrograd Academy awarded him the Demidoff prize (46). More independent films should win Academy Awards. 

Best director is the most interesting Academy Award category. 

In May 1990, DuPonts Lavoisier Academy awarded the Lavoisier Medal for Technical Achievement to Iler posthumously, and in September 1990, the DuPont Company opened a new research center in New Johnsonville, Tennessee, and named it after Ralph K. Iler. 

No matter. The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a leading role (Dustin Hoffman as the autistic man, Raymond Babbit), Best Director, Best Picture, Best Writing—and it became the highest grossing film of the year that it appeared. The film also won the Golden Bear at the 1989 International Film Festival, and remains the only film to have won both the Golden Bear and the Academy Award for Best Picture. 

Anticipating an event and experiencing it are not the same What is the value for a film producer of a sweep of the Academy Awards It would certainly be possible to survey producers in advance and gauge their expectations, but this would not be very efficient or accurate. Why not simply look at the revenues for films that have won awards in the past - that is, use actual rather than anticipated results By the same token, why should we search for the value of life and health in the expectations of individuals who have little experience with the serious possibility of loss Of course, economists in this life cannot survey the victims of fatal occupational injuries and diseases, but they can study people who have come close to such an end, and they can consult with family and friends regarding their loss. Moreover, there is no impediment to research on victims of nonfatal outcomes. In a sense, this ex post approach to the value of life and well-being is implicit in the problem of public rescue episodes mentioned above many hazards command a far greater public value after they have materialized than before. 

In some cases, filmmakers will shoot a story that offers a basic narrative arc but wait until they re editing to specifically consider structure. This usually means a considerably longer editing period. For example, Susan Froemke describes working with editor Deborah Dickson on the Academy Award-nominated Lalee s Kin The Legacy of Cotton,... 

There is also a difference between being fair and being balanced. Look at Errol Morris s Academy Award-winning The Fog of War. The film offers a platform to the uncontested and at times seemingly self-serving views of its subject, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. But that s the point of the film Morris leaves it to the audience to decide whether they want to accept or discredit McNamara s words. This approach is fair because the rules of the film are clear. Had Morris somehow billed the film as a definitive history of American conflict in the 20th century, then obviously other views would have been necessary.

Discussed here are two of their feature documentaries. Troublesome Creek A Midwestern, about the Jordan family s struggle to save their Iowa farm, won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1996 and was nominated for an Academy Award. So Much So Fast, which premiered at Sundance in 2006, is about the events set in motion when Stephen Heywood was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig s disease). I spoke with the filmmakers separately for this interview, conducted in 2003 and updated since. 

The solid work Bohr took up, in February 1905, when he was nineteen years old, was a problem in experimental physics. Each year the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters announced problems for study against a two-year deadline, after which the academy awarded gold and silver medals for successful papers. In 1905 the physics problem was to determine the surface tension of a number of liquids by measuring the waves produced in those liquids when they were allowed to run out through a hole (the braided cascade of a garden hose demonstrates such waves). The method had been proposed by the British Nobelist John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh, but no one had yet tried it out. Bohr and one other contestant accepted the challenge. 

The song was also a triumph for Shirley Bassey—she was catapirlted into super-stardom and, when she wasn t performing for a Bond film, she was the gold standard by which all subsequent vocalists would be measiued, especially female singers. Beyond the title hit, the film won an Academy Award for soimd editing thanks to its use of music and various soimd effects, such as the repeated strokes on a metallic anvil for Oddjob s theme (Martin, 2009). 

Billboard Hot 100 chart, and like the MeCartney tune, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. 

The old process resulted in a lack of control over the timing of releases. This, in turn, hobbled financial planning. Often, sales were tied to key events in the marketplace. Christmas music for Christmas is an obvious example. A product composed of winning Academy Award tracks timed for release at Oscar time is a less obvious one. More recently, this supply chain is under siege from downloads, where the consumer, in effect, takes over the role of Rhino product managers. 

In the 1957 Academy Award-winning masterpiece Bridge on the River Kwai, Alec Guinness plays Colonel Nicholson, who commands a group of British soldiers captured by the Japanese and forced to work like slaves in a ROW camp in Burma.
