The jejunal lumen of rat was perfused in Krebs-Ringer phosphate buffer (pH7.4) containing ImM glucose in the presence or absence of the non-sugar fraction or BS-1.

Residues of non-N-substituted 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose constitute only a tiny fraction (if any) of the total amino sugar of heparin and heparan sulfate. Although free amino groups are produced in the biosynthesis20,23 of heparin (between stages 1 and 2, see Scheme 1), the small proportions occasionally found in heparin and heparan sulfate preparations are most probably the result of some N-desulfation during extraction, or purification, or both. 

Another important carbohydrate group of cane final molasses, and one which has been little studied, consists of the products formed by the action of heat, alkali and amino acids upon the reducing sugars. This is sometimes termed the non-fermentable fraction as it remains after yeast fermentation although it is thereby badly contaminated with metabolic products from the yeast. 

Non-endospermic xylans from grasses are frequently stated to contain low proportions of non-xylosidic sugar units, whereas endosper-mic xylans, which are commonly isolated without deliberate fractionation of the readily extracted hemicellulosic material, are stated to be highly substituted by L-arabinofuranosyl groups. It is beyond dispute that xylans having low proportions of non-xylosidic units are present in, and commonly isolated from, the molecular populations of non-endospermic, hemicellulosic materials. 

Non-volatile organic compounds can be characterized by c.g.c. if pyrolyzed directly into the injector chamber of a g.c. [56, 57 ]. It has been shown that size exlusion chromatography and gel permeation chromatography are adequate techniques for fractionation of non-volatile components from water samples. The fractions are then to pyrolysis-g.c.— mass spectrometry for the characterization of humic acid and fulvic acids, sugars, and proteins [57 ]. ...
