Polyvinyl chloride primary product

At times, low- or high-intensity blending alone can produce a suitable product for use by the fabricator. An example of this would be a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) blend used for several large-volume extrusion applications. More frequently, however, a compounding process is required to obtain the desired physical property. The five primary compounding processes used in the industry for controlling the above parameters are single-screw extrusion (SSE), twin-screw extrusion (TSE), continuous mixers, batch mixers, and kneaders. Table 18.1 summarizes key aspects of each process. [Pg.269]

PCAs (typically medium carbon chain length compounds of 50 - 60 wt% Cl) are also used as secondary plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and in other plastics (polyesters, polyolefins, polystyrene) and rubbers (neoprene). PCAs can partially replace primary plasticizers such as phthalates and phosphate esters [21]. As plasticizers, PCAs lend flame retardancy to the product, unlike phthalate esters [5]. They are added prior to the processing step for the polymer. [Pg.208]

During the 1970s Jersey Standard s chemical product portfolio had been reduced to resemble that in 1960. Its primary chemical business remained the production of ethylene, basic polymers (including LDPE, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) using the Unipol process, licensed from Union Carbide, PP, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plasticizers (particularly for vinyl production), elastomers, and synthetic rubbers. The significant advantages of products produced from chlorinated polyethylene are their improved resistance to chemical extraction, plasticizer volatility, and weathering. Products made from chlorinated polyethylene do not fog at higher use temperatures and can be made completely flame retardant. They do, however, exhibit chemical instability similar to that of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They may be used as primary compounding materials or as blending resins with PVC, high- and low-density polyethylene, and other polymers. They are cross-linkable by irradiation or chemical means. [Pg.91]

The compatibilizer improves the mechanical properties of PE/starch, and addition of a plasticizer is actually detrimental to the finished products. Although PE is used here to demonstrate the results of this invention, results are practically the same with other combinations of polymer and compatibilizer as disclosed therein. Incorporation of compatibiHzer is easily accomplished by mechanical blending of the polymer, starch, and compatibilizer prior to extrusion. Typically, the compatibilizer is composed of the same polymer as the primary polymer itself. The polymer component of the compatibilizer may be selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(styrene-ethyl-ene-butylene-stryrene), poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl chloride, or derivatives thereof [6]. [Pg.47]
